Can someone/anyone/everyone summarize why the scary warning light might come on?



I headed into philly last night with the girlfriend to see Kooza (Cirque du Soleil Show..highly recommend).

I was on the sure-kill expressway (2 lane joke) and the light came on with the light for Engine Oil. Now there was a lot of traffic and the car was running hot. I got to the show, ok. On the way home, cooler out, lot less traffic, no stop and go and it came on again. I checked oil this morning and it was at the proper level. I could also hear the fan kicking on and off while I was stuck in traffic, but when it reaches the upper level of the red zone I start to think my hood is going to just explode off the car. This light really had me concerned.

The only other question I have is the car just turned 50K, are these cars programmmed to have the light go on for 50K service like other cars?

The "engine oil" light is for low oil (not pressure). The ! light comes on with almost all warning lights. When did you last change your oil?

One long, one short, 5 short.

Judging from the summary I would assume it is a 1-5 No Fault.

Maybe the car got to hot and that triggered the Warning Light to go off?

Upper level red on temp gauge meant failing water pump for me. VERY DANGEROUS!

Better get it checked or a new engine could be in your future!

Temperature gauge was in the upper level of the red zone, meaning it really couldn't go much higher, but like I said fan was kicking on and off.

If there is air in the coolant loop, how do I bleed it?

get engine at op temp so that thermostat is open and coolant is running thru the complete system. turn on heater. Loosen bolt on the top front of water neck. air will come out first and then coolant. close when only water comes out.

My car run in the upper level of the temp gauge and I changed to a VW fan relay. Works much better now.

99% your water pump is failing...go get it checked out!



No matter what, that much heat is not good !

Maybe the hydraulic tensioner of the toothed main belt has failed.

Check the tensions of the belts before taking the pump off.



If the belts is not tensioned anymore the pump will not run enough.

And you are lucky as well in that case that the alignement is still correct.

High water temp triggers the "!" light

When my S2 did this, my water pump impeller was loose on the shaft, poor water circulation. Overheating is very bad for engines, I would suggest fixing it before you kill it good.
