actually, the decision NOT to call it the S3 was based on the well published, advertised, and touted idea that 83% of the car was "new" - porsche wanted to make a statement about how different the car was and went about saying so
while the chassis clearly has its roots in the previous model, there are significant enough differences everywhere that could easily put it square in the same situation as any other first year car
saying that something "has not had a problem" is not the same as saying something "is not without issue" - that being said, i don't think anybody will have a problem with the rods in normal street use - i have heard of people bending them though
however, the thing i have to keep in mind is that i run these engines hard, revving well past 7k - this is in stock trim - i'll be doing the same thing in the next car, and any of them that i have - my driving is not going to change - i stand a better chance of bending a rod in a 92 than a 93 - for that reason, i don't want a 92 with stock rods - if somebody had already changed them out, i would be more inclined to overlook the year
and i completely agree about the balance issue of mixing and matching
