Replaced timing/balance belt - bad vibration gone!!
#1

Well, lot's of good news:

1. My DMF/clutch is fine

2. Weird high pitch vibration in shifter gone

3. I actually did the work myself and did it right!

Replacing the timing/balance belt fixed the weird vibration.

Some comments on the job:

First time doing this on a 968.

After I had it at TDC and locked down, the upper balance shaft was about 2 teeth to the right from where it should have been. I think that added to the vibration.

When it came time to compress the tensioner I couldn't compress that thing no matter what I tried. Spent almost an hour trying. I finally realized that the tensioner was at it's max travel. So I thought that it was froze up and that I would have to replace it. To get it off I cut the old timing belt and then removed the tensioner. I put the thing in a huge vise and it took a LOT of pressure to get it to compress a tiny bit. Then I compressed it SLOWLy down all the way. Released it, and then did the same thing for four complete cycles. That seemed to fix it. It still took a LOT of pressure to compress it, but I thought that was good, and it that after compressing, it pushed itself out well. When i re-installed it with the new belt i noticed that the plunger was only about 15% out of the length of the travel, which is good!

So back on it all went! Getting that timing belt to line up was a *****! Took about 45 minutes to get it right. Next time I do the job it should be a lot faster, I know the tricks now.

It sure was scary starting that thing up!!! Turned key, vrooom purrrrrr...joy and bliss!

Took it for a long test drive, feels like my good old 968 again!

Wife sure was happy! $81 and the vibration is gone instead of another $1400 for dmf/clutch.

Did notice while it was on the lift that the right rear tire inner area is down to the cord. I'll be putting fresh rubber on within the next week or so.

Great news! And kudos for doing this very complicated yob yourself. Did you do it completely from written instructions, or did you get somebody who's done it before to give you some guidance along the way? I've looked at the instructions someone posted awhile back, and they're about three pages long, making it very intimidating, at least to me. I replaced my balance shaft belt, and this was relatively easy, as it's pretty much unbolt/rebolt stuff, without any tensioners to mess with. Congrats!

That real long write-up is what I used but it has a LOT of stuff in it that's not necessary, and some stuff that wasn't in it.

But that write-up and 8 hours on a lift and my son Daniel and we got it done!
