Steering rack reinstall

Maybe I was just lucky, but I got mine back together first try.

We'll see how long it lasts leak free.

Wow - where is the bowing "I am not worthy..." emoticon? Seriously, you were able to jam all those delicate yet incredibly tight-fitting parts back together without breaking anything, you have power assist, and no leaks? I think the odds of the US winning the next world cup are greater than that! I am truly impressed.

Maybe it wasn't first try, now that I think about it. I screwed up one of the seals on the shuttle that goes along the rack and had to order a new reseal kit to replace that one seal (so now I have spare seals).

But yeah, apart from that it's back together, I have power assist, and I haven't seen any leaks yet.

Certainly nothing like your experience, Cloud. However, my luck will probably change once I start trying to figure out why the car suddenly feels down on power over 5500 rpm.

Even getting it right on the second try is no small feat. I tore the exact seal you're referring to on my first try, and one of the ones that goes around the gear assembly inside the tower casting on the second. Again, many, many thanks to Travis at Rennbay for supplying me with replacement seals as I needed them, on an individual basis, no less - other places weren't willing or able to break up a kit.

It's funny how these things work. All kidding aside, there are probably plenty of people who have had no trouble whatsoever rebuilding their power steering racks, yet had excruciating experiences with other items, and vice versa. For example, many people have said that installing the D1R firewall brace is a very difficult job, but this went very smoothly for me without any trouble at all. Same goes for the install of the clutch high pressure line, the install of the Robby power cables, and the turbo brake proportioning valve. On the other hand, I always have great difficulty getting the bolts that hold the alternator to line up (just thinking about this job makes my skin crawl), and getting all the clearances and pre-loads on the balance shaft belt simultaneously correct always gives me fits (I must be doing something seriously wrong here - the last time I did it was with the engine out of the car on a stand, and it still took me a couple of very tedious and frustrating hours). But we can all learn from each others' techniques and hopefully decrease our collective frustration levels over time.

This is what I get for bragging -- my steering rack is no longer working correctly, When I turn the wheel sharply in either direction it it stops at about a half revolution and I get a squeal from the belt. I suspect it's the mangled roller bearing on the bottom of the tower. I coudn't find a replacement for it, so I left it as is and expected eventual failure. It lasted less than 500 miles. I now have a rebuilt steering rack on order from RockAuto (Atasco is the remanufacturer). I paid $250, including the $120 core charge.

Sorry to hear that. The truth be told, mine isn't working perfectly, either. The power assist sort of comes and goes, with no rhyme or reason. It isn't getting any worse, and doesn't really affect the way the car drives, as I really don't need the assist once the car is moving (in fact, I almost prefer not having any assist once the car is underway), and as long as there is some assist, even if it is coming in and out, during parking, it does the job. I dread yanking that thing out again, so I'm just monitoring it to see if it gets any worse, and so far, it hasn't.
