Oil in gearbox ?
#1

Handbook state 75w 90 GL 5 oil in gearbox.

But! What oil to use with option 220 gearbox (40% slip diff)

Pleas tell me the best oil to use in this gearbox.

Porsche doesn't specify a different oil for the LSD or open transaxle. Both can use the 75W-90 GL5 lube.

Redline makes a product called NS which is supposed to allow faster synchro engagement in transaxles and quicker lockup in clutch type LSD's. It will not affect the lockup in the torsen unit.

Transaxle gear oil choice is really not that critical in a street car. Racing can put demands on the oil that a synthetic product can help defend against, but for street driving a conventional oil will hold up just fine.

I have put SWEPCO 201 in my non-LSD, but I was watching a car show that other night that recommended RED LINE MTL. In our case MT-90, 75W-90 lubricant.

The lubricant lists as its benefits:

Eliminates notchy shifting

Designed for manual transmissions and transaxles

Perfect synchronizer coefficient of friction

Enables high speed downshifting

Excellent shifting even when cold

Eliminates gear whine and rattle at high temperatures

High performance gear protection

Non-corrosive toward synchronizers

Satisfies manual transmissions and transaxles requiring motor oils, or GL-1, GL-3 or GL-4 gear oils

(*** but GL-5 not mentioned. Would MT-90 be GL-5 spec?)

Here is the link for a write up on the item:

Has anyone had experience with MTL? Worth changing from SWEPCO?

it seems they used option 220 on both the clutch type and the torsen type - not sure what oil they want on the clutch type - some of them are very specific about that

any way to determine which one you have?

Bob, Mr. Silvy doesn't have a 220 box and Mr. Bozo's question was from June.

Mr. Silvy, the Redline MT-90 would NOT be appropriate for the 968 box just for the reason you point out - the lack of API GL 5 rating. This is a rating of the anti-wear properties and load carrying ability. We must have GL 5.

i guess i should have clarified to whom i was directing the question - it was to bozo (even though his post was in june) - i had not read this thread until now, but thought the questions was still one to which an answer was valuable

so then, a question to the lube guy - what oil do you use in the clutch type LSD? same? different? anything to avoid?

I use Mobil 1 75W-90 Synthetic in my race car. It has performed great. For reference, my transaxle has a Quaife diff.

Most owners manuals of clutch equipped LSD vehicles do not differentiate the type of oil to be used in their open and limited-slip gears.

People who wish to tune the clutch lockup characteristics can use the Redline NS and then use measured amounts of the friction modifier additive to get the lockup just right.

As a reference, I researched which Redline product to put in my Torsen LSD equipped late 94 option 220 968 and determined that 75W90NS was the one to go with. A few thousand street miles and ten or so autocrosses later I am happy with 75W90NS. In deciding I spoke to Redline and Torsen as well as online discussion with our oil expert Herr Greimann. I posted what I learned online at http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/show...ad.php?t=115547 .

ok - not referring to a difference between open and limited slip, but rather between clutch lsd and torsen lsd - in the clutch type, i thought there was something specific to avoid

The clutch type can be rendered ineffective if the oil has highly effective friction modifiers like molydisulfied. The clutches will not bite. The Torsen type can use anything.
