Transmission problem solved
#1

In a previous post, I indicated that 1st and 2nd gear became very difficult to engage one day after some spirited driving. Well, I dropped the transmission and ended up having it rebuilt. The job cost just shy of 1k, and the mechanic indicated that he replaced the 1st and 2nd gear syncros as well as bearings all around. He seemed to know what he was doing, although the condition of the shop almost scared me away!

Well, I got the transaxle back in the car today, and it's running tip-top once again.

So, there is officially one transaxle that had problems other than pinion bearing. Mine is the first transmission I've heard of with this problem. Hopefully the last.

Pete/RS Barn had a car with very similar symptoms which had clutch problems instead. It looks like the problem can be diagnosed by engaging the gear with the engine off. If the gear engages without a problem, the clutch is probably the culprit.

Good luck out there! I'm just glad to have my car back! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Any idea of the time he booked for this job? My transmission whines in lower gears and occasionally there is a second gear grind. I am going to probably pull the transmission and attempt this job next year.

Thanks,

Wes

I think he said he spent two days on it. I'm like you, I like to work on things myself, but I got talked out of this job. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I have torn apart transmissions before, and swore I would never do it again, but I also just don't trust anyone else. I have seen former IMSA Porsche Mechanics misadjust something, or whatever and I would rather blame myself.
