transmission vibration at 4200 rpm
#1

I just purchased a used transmission and had Max install it today (mine had some buggered up 1st nd 2nd gear hubs and syncros). The transmission shifts buttery in comparison to the old one, but at 4200 rpms, vibrates your fillings loose! It literally shakes the stainless steel shift insert , I installed, out of the shift knob! Has anyone else ever had a similar problem and what could be wrong with this transmission? The seller said it was out of a car with 72K on it.

Btw, the vibration does not occur with the car in neutral, so can a torque tube bearing be ruled out?

did you ever get an answer to your problem? I have a vibration at 3400 rpm. more like a buzz. seems to blend in after with other resonance after about 3800. FYI mine is a Tip.

we checked balance shafts and motor mounts. they are ok. some have suggested torque tube bearings. I feel its more exhaust resonance. Don't want to take things apart unless I get a validated diagnosis.

I took the car back to Max the next day and the balance shaft was buggered up. No reason for it to occur, but it did. Fixed in 5 mins. Hopefully someone with a tip can chime in with some advice or previous experience. Good luck with figuring it out!

Is this a manual transmission or a tiptronic transmission, you did not say.

When I got my 968 which I bought from Pete of RS Barn, he had told me the transmission was not great in 1st or 2nd. I initially put in a transmission fluid called Sliptronice I believe (not sure of the spelling) but the new type of transmission fluid definitely helped. Thereafter I had the transmission rebuilt at Germantown Transmission located IN Bend Oregon, and again installed Sliptronice in the transmission. Flash gave me the correct spelling of the fluid.

William, I have a manual transmission. Thanks for the heads up on the trans additive. May have to give it a shot when I get my old trans rebuilt.
