rebuilt transmission
#1

As many of us have experienced my Limited transmission syncros are failing between 1st and 2nd and 2nd to first. I have already drained the transmission fluid and exchanged it with the thicker recommended fluid per Flash. It has helped it but did not cure it. I just called Pelican Parts and they recommended a company called California Motorsports. This company specializes in rebuilding transmissions. They estimated over the phone a cost of about $3,500-$4,500. It this a fair price? Has anyone dealt with this company? I do not know if my local shops here in Portland Oregon have the experience to rebuild the transmission. According the California Motorsports they claim the box is a tricky one to work on as the tolerances are very tight.

What is anybodies opinion on this matter?

A shop in NJ (partner of RSBarn) did mine for a lot less. Can't remember exact price, but parts and labor combined were nowhere near $3500.

that price seems high, but bobby does everything in there - his labor was only $750 the last time i called him, but the parts are a killer - he doesn't scrimp (not that the other shops necessarily do) - he is pretty up front about telling you that you can expect to have to change every bearing in there if you really want it done right

that being said, you can easily expect it to be $3k, and more if you need synchros or gears

When I had mine done here in New Mexico, Russ Kelso of PMCI in Corrales, NM did the job for $2,500. You could ship it both ways and still save a bit. Give Russ a call at: (800)437-PMCI or email: pmciinc@comcast.net His work is excellent, I have used his shop since 1993 on my various Porsche cars over the years. (924S, 944S2, 968 Tip, 968 six speed, 356B and now my 944S2 with Corvette engine. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.
