Transmission Mounts
#1

I have recently replaced the engine mounts and have been delighted with the results. The car feels so much tighter, responsive, more composed over rough roads; and that nastly knock/rattle from the front end is gone!!!

Which brings me to the transmission mounts. My car has 165K kilometres on the clock and is a street non-M030 car that is pretty much stock. For those more experienced than I;

1. Is replacement part pf routine maintenace and at what mileage seems to be the norm?

2. If mine are dodgy, what symptoms would I tend to experience?

3. Is replacement a big job and is Porsche the only vendor of these?

Thanks,

Peter

I saw a post recently where someone took an old mount and filled the gaps with urethane. Probably an easy way to deal with old mounts if you don't mind a little more transmitted vibration/noise from the tranny. I don't know how much more it is, since I haven't done this mod. You should find this with a search.

Thanks, i think that i had already read most of those posts. Most of the members who did that were tracking their cars and i presume the stiffer mount had performance benefits. I am really just wanting to understand what the symptoms of dodgy transmission mounts might be and what the options for replacement are for a everyday street car.

Thanks again,

Peter

there is only 1 mount for the trans. it is more of a hanger than a mount.

That was my thought Flash, it really doesn't do much.

Thanks, i was aware of the basic configuration, but hadn't been under the car to see how the fixings and the mount worked in practise.

So are you all saying that the mount is unlikely to cause any issues on our cars - at least for everyday use?

Thanks again,

Peter

it's very rare to hear of anybody having to deal with a trans mount on anything other than a race car

Have a 93, Cab Tip, Car was happy after replacement torque was installed, got a new fresh coat of fresh paint, replaced winter wheels from 16" to my summer 17", then Bang a new issue, seems like after an hour driving with the 17" wheels something is thumping in the rear , my wife said it maybe the exhaust banging. only happens when driving, no sound stationary After reading some topics in "what's this sound" someone stated it may be the transmission mount. Any advise ???

I was informed the entire transmission has only a single mount back there, so whether that's the source of your thump sound or not, it certainly warrants inspecting it first before troubleshooting other causes.

Thanks for the reply, is there anything else I should inspect??

it's just weird that changing the wheel  from 16" to 17" would cause this issue, I am debating if I should put back the 16" wheels.

Could also be just a coincidence and not necessarily related to the wheels switch, but I suspect chances are greater than not there is some connection ..

No things in the boot that can make the noise like a spare wheel or so?

Probably has more to do with the torque tube replacement than the wheel exchange. Removing the transmission is required for torque tube replacement, so lots of parts are removed. The larger wheels with lower profile tires just transmitted more bumps into the car, so that may have been enough to loosen or knock something loose. Could be the trans mount and/or exhaust hanger.  You'll need to get it up in the air and look around and use a pry bar to check for loose components.  The trans mount has to go in exactly correct or you can think it is in, when it really is not and then you'll get knocking.

As Flash said, the mount is more of a hanger. If you had your car in the air you could actually push side to side on the trans and it will give some as the hanger has a rubber center that bolts go through. If you push on the tranny and it thunks against one side, you may have an install problem with the mount or more being out of alignment. Worth looking at.
