Pinion bearing repair.
#1

I was wondering if replacing the pinion bearings is within the abilities of a capable DIY owner. Has anyone done this before?

well...........

it is, IF you have the right tools - i've not had to do this one myself yet, but i spent some time with mine while it was apart on the bench - it's really not any more complicated than any other differential or transmission - setting the preloads and gear wear patterns correctly is the toughest part of these jobs (besides knowing what to look for in the way of damaged or worn parts - that takes a trained eye) - yes, you can swap out the bearing and slap it together - that does not mean that it was put together correctly - mismatching wear patterns causes short life on gears - incorrect preloads means you'll be back in there in short order too

this is one of those that CAN be done, but really should be left to trained professionals, as the cost of doing it wrong is far beyond the cost of paying for it the first time

I've replaced the bearings from the differential of a tiptronic.

For a tip it is not nescessary to take the complete transmission out of the car.

But you must have enough space under the car!. 6 foot/feet or so. 1,75 meters

But you need a micrometer and you have to make 2 usefull tools.

It is not possible for me to post the photoos. Too big. I'm sorry. But sent me a pm If you need them.

You need those those to measure the preload of the bearings and to measure the clearance between ring and pignon.

With the tools the job can be done. But better is letting it do by a trained mechanic.

This because you have to fit the shims correct.

And to control the pattern of the gears as well with some blue stuff.

To replace the bearings It is a hard job too if you do not have the right tools.

To remove the bearings from the differential you need a flame or a welder to bring in the necessary heat.

To set the new bearings you will need an electric heatelement at 70degrees so the bearings can be fit proper.

The job is not a DIY job. Advise go to a good shop with is recommended.
