ticking noise after oil change
#1

I changed the oil and spark plugs in my car, I went with Mobil 1 15w-50 extended performance, now I notice a ticking noise, It almost sounds like the valve train, but when i use a screwdriver to listen it doenst sound like that is where the noise is coming from, It might be the oil pump, is that locared towards the rear of the engine?

How should I go about debugging this problem

First of all, you put in 7 quarts right? (just checking the basics)

Next, drive the car and let it warm up to see if the noise goes away. You may need to drive for a couple of blocks at least. Quite often these cars have a lifter tick that occurs if they have been sitting for a while, or have some delay in getting oil to the valve train. Everyone has experienced this at one time I'm sure. After the oil circulates for a few minutes, the tick should go away.

Also, keep in mind you put in a new filter (you did right?) that does not have oil in it yet. So the first startup my starve the head for oil in the beginning.

thanks for the replys, I put in 6.5 quarts and checked the stick 20 and 30 min after running the engine, the noise has quieted down, but is still there, BUT it might be how the car should sound afterwards since I'm not sure when was the last time this car was serviced it must have been a looong time. I have all kind of parts on the way to try and get the car back up to spec. The car feels really different right now I'm still trying to figure out if it is a good thing or a bad thing, the engine is running noticeably smoother with new motor oil and plugs(NKG) but I'm having starting problems and it feels like I lost power(this could be in my head). The old plugs were some crappy ac delco with a huuuge spark gap. I have a new fuel relay, coil, distributor and rotor on the way hopefully those will get rid of my starting problems <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Hi

I bought my 968 2 months ago, and eksperienced this ticking from my cams (I recon). I had an oil/filter change, and the it got better. But it didn`t go away.

When the engine is warm it goes totaly away. I also think the engine is running "harder" with the new oil. (Mobile 1 5w- 50)

Do I have to worry about this "cold engine" noise ??

Count me in the same boat! Still trying to diagnose the problem with no luck. Compression perfect, everything perfect, bearings changed...still there.

This can be a difficult problem to troubleshoot, there are many variables. Here's my understanding of what I've read about and experienced over the years...

When CHANGING a car to Mobil 1 15W-50 (I use this also) sometimes 'ticking' starts happening. Nothing to worry about.

If you've been running Mobil 1 for a long time and the engine didn't tick, and suddenly starts, then that's a problem.

Hi

Well, the previous owner used Shell TMO for god knows how long. But the car is well maintained, and cambelts were changed 6 months ago. I don`t know

if they hav been controlled after, but the engine is very sound and clean. Everything in the engine seems excellent, and the rev is astonishing.

It also seems like the engine is running "harder" after oil change !

I see this as a "cold engine" problem and I hope I don`t have to worry too much...

And it`s going more and more quiet i think! Can it be a problem parking in a driveway that has a 8 degree angel. Nose down ? Seems like it`s emptying the gearbox of oil, and uses the first 20 secs to fill it back in...
