tapping/clatter under valve cover

If you have 4 steady bars then one would assume the oil pump must be picking up oil, no?

See the start of the thread. Original poster had steady 4 bars but no oil pressure on the top end and a cracked oil pickup tube.

A good drive won't happen for a little while, right now the bumper cover is off getting repaired/resprayed. I'll let the car idle until it gets up to temperature and see if the clattering sorts itself out.

There was no way to tell without dropping the pan, just the bad ticking. Oil pressure guage seemed normal over 4 bars.

Seems in these cars, they are sensitive to oil level, at least mine is. I fill it to the top of the mark, maybe a tad over and it quiets down.

I'm confused - I don't understand how the oil pressure gauge could read normally when the pickup tube is broken. If it's a lack of sufficient oil pressure at the lifters that causes the clattering, why wouldn't that register as an abnormally low reading on the gauge?

My understanding is that it's reading the pressure "down low" - in my 944S I had 5 bar of oil pressure, and still no oil pressure at the top, resulting in a deflated chain tensioner and a hell of a "buzz" as the chain scraped against the inside of the cover.

OK, that makes a certain amount of sense. Still, it's a closed loop system, so I would think an absence of oil fed into the system due to a cracked pickup tube wouldn't generate any flow, and therefore pressure, anywhere in the system. Maybe if the tube were only partially cracked, there would be enough flow to register some pressure down at the pressure sender, but not enough to pump up the lifters.

I was told my pressure differential was due to a dishonest seller who jammed up the oil galleys to create better low end pressure, while starving the top end.

I repaired a 944 2.5 once with a cracked pickuptube(balanced shaft where misaligend) , it was reading at 4 bars and over , exept when idle it started making noise a had fluxtuating oil pressure .

Replaced tube , and i was surprised that it had no bearring damage , i pulled Nr 2 rodcap and used plastigauge to check , put everything back together and all was fine , the car is stil driving until this day , has been 10 years ago .
