Suspension Mod's - Best Place to Begin
#21

Yes that's the car. It has the wide body kit put on by Kelly Moss. I have some pictures that I will post later.

Question: If I am upgrading the stock front springs and rear torsion bars should I also change the rear helper springs?

I never understood why Porsche went the route of helper springs, but I bet there is not anything available other that what you have for it. I don't see why you would not just loose them altogether when you go with the big bars.

I would ask KMR or someone in the know however.

Welcome aboard by the way. I look forward to hearing all about your fine car. Is the car mostly for the track?

I'm sure the guys at KMR would recommend going full coil overs and that may still be an option. I thought that I would at least try what I have before breaking the bank.

The car is mostly used on the street and the occaisional DE or track day.

Does anyone ever go to larger torsion bars (along with comparable changes to the front, of course)? I see they're available from several sources, in many size increments, but have never heard that anyone has actually swapped them. Yes, I know it's a real pain to do, but I'm thinking of putting it on my "winter projects" list.

That is what I plan on doing (see post on Page 1 of this thread). I have Powerbarz torsion bars made by Sway-A-Way

One club member is selling me PI lowering springs for front (-30mm).

Worth doing this upgrade? the price is really cheap, and I'm not upgrading my suspension yet (maybe after one year).

How will the car handling change if the front is lowered -30mm? Unfortunately I Don't know the spring rates of PI springs, but they are sold as a upgrade part for 968.

I've planned to install them when I setup my summer wheels on (in April), and do the wheel alignment after install. Anything else necessary? Stock shocks work well enough with them?

PI? what am i missing there? 30mm is a lot - you really need to know the spring rate

there are a few people who have gone to bigger torsions - i think bob blackwell has 28mm bars - nice way to go, but a lot of work, and not as adjustable - not sure if the stock shocks can handle them or not - bob might have feedback on that - he is running the konis now, but might have run the stock shocks before

hmmm - i don't know those - if there was a picture of the entire spring, and measurements of the free length, number of coils, and wire diameter, i could figure it out though - maybe you could contact them and get those?

really need to know the rate though, before trying to sort out what to do elsewhere on the car - this car especially is all about balance

p.s. - the price isn't that good - 100 pounds is about 200 dollars - pretty sure you can get known springs for that any time, and probably even a kit with threaded collars, so you can adjust ride height

I'm getting the springs below 50% of normal price (private auction).

ah well, then you aren't in bad shape if they are wrong - you can always go to a race shop and measure the rate, or calculate it after you get them - i would do one or the other though, before installing them, especially since after installing them, you will need a 4 wheel alignment

Ok. i'll get them tomorrow, so we'll see what kind of springs they are. Hmm.. maybe have to update the rear end aswell. well, have to test the car first with that setup, how it handles.

got the new springs now. they seem quite nice, with red color. I consulted for PI sales service, they said springs are 25% stiffer than OEM, so the spring ratio should be ok for my understanding. the only matter that concerns me is the 30mm lower front which will I got after installing the springs. better grip to front, I bet, but no cruising on "off-road" roads after that. well, porsche gives its pleasure on tarmaq anyways, so I think I'll live with that. too bad The streets here in helsinki are totally in bad condition on some parts. but, I like more racey feeling still, so just more fun. And more work for my dentist with loose patches!

Sorry for the Noob question, but what is the stock suspension set up on a 968? Shocks and springs up front and shock and torsion bars in the rear? So its similar to the Pre 964 911 suspension in the rear? Typical lowering is done with springs and adjustable shock up front and re-indexing the torsion bars in the rear. That is before full on coilovers.

Thanks for the basics answers in advance.
