D1R SuperCharger Install
#21

Since the S/C install, we've been chasing an intermittent knock sensor blink code (1-2-3-1). I reset the codes with a Bosch Hammer and the 1-2-3-1 came back. Last night, I replaced the #1 knock sensor (PITA not withstanding the supersized dose of blue loctite that was fighting my efforts). Having now run 50 miles, I think its fixed and blinking 1-5!

Ready for the Ortega Run now.

cool! i figured as much - it seemed like it might have gotten knackered doing the head or something - it will be interesting to see if it went into limp mode as a result of the code

What was the before and after power? I'm thinking about the SC for the race car...but the application might not be right for a racer vs a street performer...

The unit looks outstanding and I like that I could probably do the install over the winter myself.

this is definitely not intended for a race car - the rev range of the power curve is all wrong - we set it to make torque in the middle, not to make the bulk of its power up top, which is where you would tune for a race car - in fact, we deliberately cut it off at the top, as we ran out of injector - that is not to say that it won't be fun to drive on the track, but it is not designed for that, and would take a lot of tuning, modification to the supercharger itself, and some other parts to really make that work right

the charts showing the curves are on the main thread about the release of the kit

Hi Flash - thanks for the info. What would you suggest? Turbo up the 3.0 or throw a 2.5 Turbo motor in the 968? One of the members from EEK racing (?) made some mad time improvements putting a 2.5 in his car.

Not likely for the 2011 season but I would like to race in Super Touring at the national level in 2012 and will need about 275-300 hp/tq at the wheels to compete.

Cheers

well, i would talk to pete, since he knows the tracks you are running, and what might optimize the car for them - a supercharger would work well, but it would need to be configured for track - i will be doing on myself, but it's a while off still

i'd also look into the regulations and such to see what that does to you

in general, at the same output levels, turbos are harder to drive fast than centrifugals, due to the way they each build boost - but, a 2.5 turbo would be a "known commodity" and might be cheaper and easier to install

the output you are looking for is very attainable, but it will involve some serious changes to the system - by 2012 i will have all of this sorted out, and you might have more options

but we are now WAY off track of bva's thread, which is about his install

bva was kind enough to hand me the keys today - yahooooooo!

The D1 SC is a very interesting modification.

The best way I could find to articulate it was through a comparison to a 2006 Boxter S (987) that I drove a few months ago. That car had a lot more down low grunt than ours. The 968 with the SC, at least the very fine example that I drove today, has that same kick, but with the endlessly pleasing front-engine, rear-drive arrangement. A very interesting modification indeed. My compliments to the chef.

it was fun to see the grins on people's faces when they came back from their drive

the analogy is not far from what i have used - it just feels like a bigger engine with more cylinders - the elimination of the "drop" in between exhaust pulses is one of the things that makes it seem like it has more cylinders - it is a smoother exhaust note, and more continuous

i got to drive it too, and having just driven mine, i got a good comparison

i can't wait to hear the review when he installs the cat-back - that really opens it up - the car is very solid, and smooth, and when he gets that in, it will really complete the package

the beauty too is that it will continue to run like this, and not have the eventual problems that such a kit would have if it didn't have the part throttle tuning we did on this one

quick update...we've put over 6k miles on the D1R SuperCharger now without issue. along the way, I added the RSB catback to complete the kit. Love the exhaust tone from it.

In fiddling with installing an oil temp sender last week, i managed to foul the MAF connector, causing an intermittent "check engine" light that would come on under heavy load above 3500 rpm. A blink test showed 1-2-2-3, Oxygen Regulation. With electrical contact cleaner and a q-tip, i cleaned both the plug and socket on MAF connector; no more ! light. Butt-O-Meter thinks this added another ponie under the hood also.

This car has over 110,000 miles on it now and I couldn't be happier with it.

lol - thanks brian - check is in the mail

it's really quite flattering to see how many of these kits are out there, and all running strong - i can't wait for the paso robles run where we get to see a bunch of them all lined up
