supercharger project update
#21

Well, I came in at the end of this conversation, having just checked back into 968forums for the first time in several years, and I have to say, I second everyone's disappointment at the news of Flash ending his quest for that holy grail of 968 quests...300hp for <7K.

I have a supercharged 968 myself and I can tell you all...it's a very difficult undertaking gentlemen. And, unfortunately, expensive too. But that's the key right. It's not that it can't be done. It's--can it be done for a reasonable price. I surely did not find the right combination for that. I have probably spent...sh_t I don't want to think about it...15K on the project. Thank god I'm not married or I'd be divorced. That's too much, at least for me. I use the car as my daily driver now and it runs good enough for that. However, it still needs a little more finishing work and some tuning. But that's dyno time and I am out of money. Besides, it's been in and out of shops (mostly in) for the last three years and I just want to drive it, enjoy it, and get her back into tip top shape.

I applaud Flash for his efforts in trying to find a magical combination of parts that would work for our cars. It seems soooo attainable too, dammit, like a carrot dangling before us. We have one of the most beautifully scuplted vehicle out on the road and yet its performance leaves us just a little...wanting.

While I think I will always want more power, I am finding that I appreciate the overall driving experience of the 968 more and more as time goes by.... And I car less and less about how fast it gets from one street light to the next. Is it "underpowered" by today's standards? Sure. But then it is a 13+ yr old car. The wonderful thing is that it can still hold its own against most new cars- certainly those at the same price point. Get in the twisties or on a track and the odds shift that much more in our favor. And the design? The car is just damn fine lookin'! There aren't many other cars that I like more from a looks perspective. And the ones I do are so far out of my grasp that the closest I will ever get is a poster in my garage.

I'm mostly bummed because I like to see different things being developed for our special cars. The more choices we have for this very rare platform, the happier I am. Would I have ever bought or will I ever buy a supercharger system for the 968? Dunno. I would consider it for sure, but it is no longer a must have like it was a few years ago.

I do sincerely appreciate the efforts of Flash and his contacts in investigating this. One thing is for sure, if he had been able to hit the mark, it would have been nothing short of the best!

To a320fo- please start a thread on your car- I think a lot of people would love to see what it is all about! Must be a blast to drive with all the extra ooompf!

well, i finally got to see this car - i heard about it 5 years ago when i first starting poking around with the 968 - tony garcia had it built, but he said at the time that it wasn't quite done, and didn't run like he wanted it to

he then sold the car to a new member here (a320f0) - he brought it over yesterday - really nice guy - i had a blast - i got a chance to poke around it and check it out - it shows promise for sure - not sure if it will ever be CARB legal, but i think it can be made to run well

the new member has, subsqeuent to purchase, taken it around to a few people, trying to get it worked out and running right - an intercooler was added, water injection was played with - a stand alone management system was installed - it still has some work to go, but i think it can be done

i am by no means slagging this car, or the system - i am calling it like i see it - i think there has been some outstanding work done here - i am very impressed with a lot of it - i also think some things were not handled as well as they should have been - the good news is that all of that is correctable

currently it has idling issues, and runs out of breath way too early - not sure if its the compressor is at limit due to the pulley change made to accommodate the restriction of the newly added intercooler, or if it's injector size, or what

BUT, it has GOBS of torque down low - it came on hard just over 2k, unlike our car, where nobody is home until over 4k - VERY NICE to feel that - from there it just stayed big and flat all the way to nearly 5k - not sure if the variocam is working or not though

he took it to a shop that installed an intercooler - i would have to say that these guys did not install this intercooler very well - the plumbing is illogical (but predictable) and the intercooler contributes a LOT of heat to the radiator, making the car run hotter than it needs to - i would relocate that and get it out from in front of the radiator

the intake itself is also illogical, and the air cleaner is about 1/3 the size it needs to be

some rerouting will resolve all of these issues

i would probably reconnect the water injection, which was disconnected when the intercooler was installed

not sure if the stand alone is going to be the answer or not - i will have to do more research on this one

the injectors were changed, and i'll have to look into that too

clearly i have more homework to do before i can make any real determinations as to the viability of the system, and how repeatable for any reasonable price, and potential legality of the system, but i think this one can be made to produce about 305bhp and maybe 275 ft/lbs, and down much lower with a much wider band than we have

so, there's still hope - i know i can make it better - just not sure yet how much

i'll post a lot more later, as we tinker with this and get it going, but here are a couple of teaser shots:

I hope this one pans out. I have been looking into these roots type blowers for awhile now.

LOTS of things to look into on this still - i have barely scratched the surface on it - it was way too hot yesterday to reach around in there and see what's going on

Your straight talk is always appreciated form my end.

And on a brighter note, this "poking around" could very well reveal to you a cheaper and better way to make a design 1 SC upgrade in the future.

not likely - the parameters are still the same, and immutable - the time allotment for this is going to be huge, and frankly it just isn't that important to me - while i would love the additional low end torque, i can get to pretty much the same horsepower with other methods - there is zero chance of this making more horsepower, and inevitably somebody is going to ask for more anyway, and i just won't be going there - there isn't room for the plenum needed to make it happen, even IF i could get past all the other issues

if it works out fairly easily, fine - it it becomes a big nightmare, i'm going to give up on the concept entirely - i was prepared to do that before

remember that the current owner has dumped a ton of money into trying to get this working, and this was with the major stuff already done when he got it, and it still isn't quite right - this may never get to the point of a plug and play kit, and it may never get to the point of meeting the budget restrictions

i'm pretty sure i can get it running better - i'm not at all sure i can make it fit the other design parameters

so, don't get your hopes up that this will ever work, but i'll give it one more shot - there is potential, but no guarantee

cautionary side note: either way, the long term realities are the same - prepare for a complete engine rebuild - prepare for chassis, brake, and suspension upgrades too - by the time you are all said and done, you are likely looking at nearly $20k - anything short of that and you will have either something unsafe or unreliable - if you are thinking of "doing it all yourself" or buying used parts, and trying to save money, please do not consider anything like this at all

Whether it runs well or not, it looks really good with the BBS wheels.
