everybody knows i have long been wanting to do a centrifugal supercharger on this car - the design parameters were:

easy installation

universal application

complete kit with all tuning

no intercooler

low boost

ac retention

power steering retention

305bhp

retail price point around $5k

well, i finally got a chance to play with the supercharger today - i spent the better part of a day working on this - having the unit in my hands made a big difference - i fondled it for hours

alas, it seems it is not meant to be - the tiny one does not push enough CFM, and the unit we would need to use to get the desired power was just too large to fit into any exisiting area and connect to anything

in order for this to work, i would have to either create a new intake manifold, or swap out the power steering for an electric unit - neither allowed for the price point - both are more time and resource intensive than i am willing to get into

it will work fine on the race car, because i can delete the AC, but that isn't even all that attractive to me anymore

so, sorry guys - this one is dead for me - i'll be moving on to a 3.2 with head work and cams to get to the 305

two upsides:

i got to drive my car today, and got a chance to play with the suspension settings some more - closer now - one more click i think

there was a cold beer waiting for me when i got back
bummer
Oh well.... but thanks for looking into it. Now onto the next project!

Bummer dude!

To be honest, I was initially very interested in boosting whatever 968 I ended up with.... As time goes on, I find that I care less and less about raw power and more and more about the overall experience. Now, I very highly doubt I would do anything beyond a chip and the airbox. Guess I am getting to be an old fart!

And, let's face it, if you want 275 or more HP, there are better mousetraps out there.... with factory warranties (and some with AWD) to boot. They're not Porsches, but it is hard to argue with the numbers.

Regardless- big thanks to Bob and everyone who looked into this. I greatly appreciate the efforts.

yes - thanks - it was a pretty big bummer for me too - there was no problem with the tiny unit, but as soon as we did the math, and had to bump up to the bigger unit, that was it - without dramatically complicating the process and increasing the cost, it just didn't work

this was also depressing because i was able to confirm the temperature numbers, and knew that if i could fit it in there, the idea would have worked

it was especially depressing to watch an S2000 roll out the door with a unit on it, just having come off the dyno with 375 at the wheels! that system is CARB pending too - and to think that if i could have fit 2 sets of golf clubs and 2 cases of wine in the car without using the passenger seat, i would have bought one of those........

oh well

at this point, any suoercharger project of any type would be a lot more expensive, more complicated, and require a compromise of a system elsewhere in the car

before anyone asks, i have no interest in a turbo project, as the plumbing precludes the chassis bracing i want in the car, and it would never get past smog, and the cost and complications are just too much for a daily driver - besides, there are already enough turbo cars out there that either don't run, still need "a little more tuning", or aren't being driven for one reason or another

i have no interest in a V8 project either - been there done that - too much character change

i can get close to the target figures normally aspirated anyway - not that far off now - so i'll just have to find more ways to remove more weight if i want that magic 10:1 number
PEP TALK TIME

We are all bummed out but youre the one who put in the time and effort, just as you have done the past. You knew what you were striving for, complete and reliable, but it just wasn't in the cards. Better face the music then to start patch work and end up unhappy several grand into it.

I admire your determination to continue to shoot for that 10:1. I think you'll get there and then of course I'm going to want to bum a ride.
+1 Rhude.
thanks guys - lol - i'm not putting a "for sale" sign on the car - i can still have plenty of fun with it - the reality is that other than on the track, i am hard pressed to use all of the power i have now, let alone any more - i was hoping to improve the situation with less work, and similar costs, making it more accessible and better for everybody

i have always been a firm believer that if you want to go really fast, go out on the track, and do it with a dedicated track car if you want to do it a lot - i got the car working so well, that it was getting to the point that it was almost a track car, and consequently found myself wanting power to keep up with the GT3s i was staying with in the corners but losing in the straights

i will just follow my own advice and build a dedicated track car, and return this one to a more streetable layout - it won't mean a lot of changes though, so it's no big deal - this car will still get more power, but just not as much, and it will probably wait until i need to get inside the engine

so, the bad news is that i can't do the supercharger - the good news is that i get to start on the race car that much sooner
Park yours next to the M3 and pop the hood on both are start comtemplating.. How bad would it be to put a BMW motor in a Porsche, there both German?
lol - don't think i haven't thought about it - just too much of a project, and again, changes too much of the character of the car for me - there is something familiar and comforting about the way the 968 engine spools - it reminds me a lot of the way my mgb ran - same ups and same downs - that may be one of the reasons i like it - when i sit in it, it feels to me a lot like a bigger, more solid, and updated version of the car i had driven for over 20 years
You would still have that, it would just be moved to the BMW. Just wait till the wife heads out for the weekend.
lol - yeah - not gonna happen - i have been given the "hands off" warning about tinkering under the hood of the bmw - even after she took it out on the track, i think i am still under a mod ban on that puppy
+1 with all on the sentiments expressed here. however, with 100k on the odo I would have had to first rebuild the engine before SC-ing it, so not sure I would have gone to those lengths . and frankly, if a rebuild is eventually in the cards going to a 3.2 will add only a few more $ to the job, but if that brings me another 20-25 ponies and ft/lbs over where I am now, lower temps than with an SC, less stress on the engine than with an SC, I'll be quite content, for my kind of usage, particularly since I have no intention of tracking this car and trying to outrun GT3s on straightaways
What about this???

Or this ???
Oh well....you still have your cold beer. Maybe you could soup-up a beer-bong or something really meaningful.
Hmm, beer injection...
[ATTACHMENT NOT FOUND]Thats a shame Flash, thanks for trying, i am sure with your assistance we will find some way to increase power.

Cheers
