Supercharger Kit - Batch 4.........sort of
#1

I have given a LOT of thought to the continuance of providing the Supercharger Kit lately. There have been a number of issues and concerns with producing it, and a considerable amount of effort goes into each batch.

One of the most difficult things has been the process of gathering enough orders to run a batch. It has been a lot like cat herding. It takes months to get them all together, and I am like everyone else in that I don't want to leave a lot of my own money floating around out there for a long time. Consequently this means that I need to wait until the last order needed comes in, before I can order the parts and head units.

Unfortunately this also opens the door to scheduling complications with the various vendors. There are over a dozen of them involved in this process, and that is a lot of opportunity for backordering, stock delay, and even Customs issues.

This last batch saw a number of such complications. It has resulted in turning what should have been a 6-8 week process into more like 5 months. This is an incredible disappointment to many, and a frustration to others, including myself. After long and careful consideration, and as a direct result, I am no longer going to run these in batches.

I will continue to produce the kits, at least for the time being, but they will be in "one-off" fashion. This is a more complicated process for me, but it is really the only way I can proceed.

To make matters worse, with this last batch, I failed to consult with the vendors and get updated prices. I wanted to hold the price as it was, and did not think it was going to rise significantly. I was wrong. Nearly every item went up 10%, even in batch quantities. Still, I held the price, because that is what was agreed upon with the customers.

The head units will see the most significant price increase by doing them one at a time. They go up nearly $400 when I do that. But, I cannot afford to sit on them. We have to remember that this is a hobby for me. I cannot let it become a full fledged business. If I were to do that, many things would have to change, including a very significant adjustment to all pricing.

Now that I am close to completion of Batch 3, I decided to get moving on the future provision. I have taken it upon myself to have some of the longer lead time items made in advance. This will dramatically reduce the lead time. Unfortunately they are not the expensive items. Those will still need to be ordered at the time of the customer placing the order. However, I have made arrangements for these things to be done much faster. The lead time now will be 10 days to 2 weeks. In an effort to shorten the lead time, and not get caught up in potential Customs issues, I have also made arrangements to have a couple of head units available locally.

That's the upside. The downside of course comes in the form of a price tag.

I am no longer able to offer the Supercharger Kit at the price it was. I am still able to provide it, and there is no change to the kit whatsoever. The new price for the kit will be $4495.

It is still the only CARB approved kit for our car, and the only one proven to work. I will try to keep everything in stock. I have ordered a head unit, so as to have a system ready to go. Barring anything weird, I will be able to ship at the end of next week, right after I ship Batch 3. I can take orders now.

The new price for the Hardware only version, for those who want to try to go for more boost and tune it themselves, will be $2695.

I can also provide unmodified head units at $1995 (compared to retail of $2195).

As soon as I finish everything involved, I will post information and pricing for the Stage 2 Upgrade Kit. This will be a kit that will be sold separately, so as to upgrade the Supercharger Kit, and will not be sold as a part of the Supercharger Kit.

I'll bet every December 26th, Santa says "@$#! those kids, I'm not doing that again next year!"

But we all count on him to show up a year later. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

lol - well, it took me a while, but i am not doing batches anymore. they are just too much work. this last batch was a vendor nightmare.

i figure, in a year or so, i'll be done with all of this. by that time, i figure pretty much everybody will have gotten what they want, and the "market" will be done. the industry mark is 2% saturation for any product, and i've already hit that on a few things. the superchargers will hit that at about 60 domestically, and we are 2/3 of the way there already.

so, we'll see how things go, but i see the end. for now, the kits are ready for ordering, priced at $4495, and will begin being available the end of next week, on a first come, first served basis.

Just exactly what is "the market"? How many 968s are left in total, any idea?

based on everything i can gather, about 6000 worldwide, with about half of those here in this continent.

of those 3000 cars, we have nearing half of their owners as members here.

of those 1300 or so members/owners, i have something on about 1/3 of their cars, and i have already hit the "magic 2%" mark on supercharger kits of the membership here. in order to move any more, the membership will need to expand (which it is doing at a rate of about a half dozen a week).

that is why i confirmed my decision not to continue with batches. i believe there are still a few people out there who want one. now that it has proven itself both on the street and on the track, and is still the only kit without issues, and is the only CARB approved kit, which will become increasingly important as more states adopt stricter testing standards, i also believe that it will become more attractive to a few people.

hence, i went ahead and rolled the dice. i ordered a small batch of the hardware stuff, which has now already arrived, and i set it up so that the rest of the parts come together quickly. that means the turnaround could be anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks, but no more of the painfully long production process. it only meant a small increase in pricing, but it is still well within the market "norm".

i won't likely be maintaining that for too long, but for now, it seems like the logical move. we'll see how it goes.

I've always been impressed with your ability to design, develop and market these amazing products to such a small pool of users. And dealing with you, one on one, makes the transaction even more special as you care about the end users and their cars.

Hopefully, I'll be able to add a SC to my 68 sometime soon. i still think it's a bargain.

i should have 2 complete kits ready to go on monday. each one after that should only take a few days, and if i jump fast enough, i might be able to keep one on the shelf for a while.

The head gasket on my M3 let go a couple of months ago. The cost for that repair, plus a few other 'while you're in there' items could have scored me a supercharger for the 968. I'll be too poor for a while now, but someday Flash, someday.....

Well, to be fair, the car ('97 E36 M3/4) has just over 200K miles on it now so I really don't have much to complain about. Nothing major or unexpected had gone wrong with it up to this point. Best car I've ever had.

ahem - the best car you've ever had???? how dare you say that on this site? lol

seriously though, start putting away your nickels and dimes. while i've said before that i was going to stop doing these, and this one at a time thing allows me to continue for the time being, it won't go on forever. i expect to be completely done with 968 stuff in about a year, and have shut all parts production down completely. i think it's run its course, and i just don't want to be doing this stuff anymore. my car is done, and i have no more motivation for this. i'd like to get on to another project. with the stage 2 stuff, the kit will put out as much power as the engine can handle, and i think i've just about nailed down anything else already. i only have a couple more things to knock out, but i am probably only going to do one run of each item, and then close out. the superchargers are incredibly complicated, and each one takes about 3 hours to assemble and pack. i just can't dedicate that kind of time anymore, and it will be the first thing to be stopped. this whole parts thing costs me about $1000 a day every day i am doing it, as it takes me away from what i do for a living. i've been at it now for a few years, and the wife just won't let me continue, and she's absolutely right.

so, figure it out. the clock is ticking.

Hmmm. What about parts in 5 years when SC stuff naturally wears out?

Interesting from a business perspective. What is easier/better, batch or single order processing?

Maybe your thinking is (too) much influenced with the unexpected efforts and higher cost of the last batch. From one of your comments, I have the impression that batch 3 was twelve kits. Perhaps the optimal would be doing a batch of, say, three. If out of stock wait until there is an order (or two) and then do a batch of three.

wear item parts will be available, as i chose off-the-shelf stuff for that

batches need to be 15 or more for it to make sense and any financial difference, which is why i am now in one-off mode

now that the Stage 2 kit has come out, 1 of the SC kits is sold, with 2 more likely to be sold soon.

that leaves 4. then they are all gone.
