One of the last SC Kit Installs completed!
#1

So, just got my car back from the mechanic, he did the install and made a few comments, but other than that, seems like it went in OK.  Had the waterpump and belts done while I was there.

These were the comments on things that he had trouble with:

  • The hose from the block, to the radiator, did not fit, he used one from a 993.  This is the hose above the upper left, of the supercharger, near the E on the PORSCHE lettering, just below the vanity cover on the intake.
  • I had saggy engine mounts, and that cause the supercharger intake to not clear over the radiator, so I had those replaced.
  • The top screws on the radiator he said were too long, and would pierce the radiator, so those were not installed.
  • Looks like I am missing a couple house clamps for the intake elbow, I did ask about that, and was told it was not under pressure and not needed, will double check it was not just missed (And I would find strange, as this guy is anal about stuff)

I think my intake filter and hose need to be adjusted a tad, as the chrome on the airfilter is rubbing the paint on the car body.

Also I noticed, a vacuum  hose, with the blue connectors, riding above the distributer cap and back to a valve near the brake booster, does not look like it is in the correct place.  Can anyone advise where that goes/routes?

Speaking of routing, I am a little concerned with the routing to the right hand side of the radiator, of all the hoses.  I can take a better photo.  I am not sure I like how the right coolant oil hose goes under the radiator like that?

Shop is 40 miles from my house, so would like to clean up the little things, and get the last 25 miles on before I can try her out with some gas!

Is it normal to feel a bit of a dead spot when I first push the pedal?  So far the car feels more (solid) during the drive back from the shop otherwise!  It almost feels as if there is no fuel briefly.

the radiator hose DOES fit.  you just have to insert the pipe farther than he probably thought.  no worries though.

the screws will not pierce the radiator, if you flatten the tips.  i should have already done that for you.

i am not happy with the oil hose routing.  that should hose on the left should go UNDERNEATH the supercharger, not lay across the charge pipe.  having it where it is will preheat the oil

there should not be a flat spot to speak of.  make sure the center hose of the 3 you were concerned about does not have any kink in it whatsoever.  given that you have found a vacuum hose issue, that may be the problem.

The vacuum hose over the distributor may be your heater control valve hose. If it is, it should run under, not over, the distributor. If it was replaced with rubber (the original is hard plastic) there may not be room for it under the distributor.

Thanks!  Yes it looks like the heater valve was replaced, I could see a bit of cooling stain underneath it, so I assume he just changed it (And didn't tell me), it looks like the hard line snakes from that point, behind and below the distributer and around the block, under the intake manifold to the rear.  Looking at this photo, I assume it goes through that tan plastic clip, under what I assume is the coolant temp sensor in the block.  Was it supposed to snake through behind the rear belt cover?

Thanks Bob, so I spent a few hours going over the install, found a few more things.  I am checking all the vacuum lines still, re-routing to clean it up a bit.

Can you tell me the bolts for the radiator? Size, washers, etc. I will just pick some new ones up, they were not in the box with all the leftover bits.

So the problems I still notice are:

Fuel lines now ride high after the FPR install, and rear vanity cover won't fit well.  Does this look correct for the FPR?  Anything I can do to change it?

Should the belt guard bracket be made more square, so it sits flush?

You can kind of see it in this photo:

Talking to the mechanic, it sounds like he raised the radiator, but not sure.  Is this right?
http://Pic

The hoses behind the radiator shield, that I am concerned about.

The air box, is not bent right I think, as it does not sit flush with the radiator shield, any advice for bending this?  Fiting it around the AFM and the cone filter is a huge pain, and it does not align well.

Want to rectify the radiator mount screws, what size and length, washers, etc do I need?

Thanks!

The charge pipe looks real close to me:

first off, the parts all fit together PERFECTLY.  they are all laser cut or CNC cut.  if you are having interference issues, or parts that are not fitting, then the problem is the installation, not the kit.  the problem is likely the missing screws.  they have to be in there in order to hold down the radiator shield, and get everything to line up.  if it has not been done, grind the points off of those 3 screws, and install them

it sounds like he did not install the radiator spacers, or something like that.  there should be no issue whatsoever with radiator clearance.

the fuel lines should not move.  the connection is in EXACTLY the same place with the new regulator.  the injectors fit the same, and the screws that hold down the fuel rail determine the height of the rail, and therefore the fuel lines.  you can manipulate the location of the fuel rail cover by loosening the screws that hold it down, and move it around to where you want it.

do not bend that belt cover down.  it needs to be at an angle, and in fact, it should be pulled upward in the holes, so that it rides as far away from the belt as possible.

not to sound bitchy, but this is one of the problems i have had.  installers don't stop to ask questions, and then start doing stuff on their own, because they think they know better.  i've had people start cutting stuff up, bending stuff, and all sorts of things.  i have personally installed about 15 kits, and NONE of them were any different, and none of them had any complications that required any modification or departure from normal installation.

what to do about it all now is the issue.  what you need to do is call me on the phone, so we can go over things one by one, and get this kit installed correctly.

Sounds good Bob, will call you!

Thanks! And no you don't sound bitchy Smile That is why I am asking the question now! If I had a garage and time, would have done it myself, but I have neither Sad

no worries.  my goal is and has always been for people with the kits to have no issues, and just plain enjoy driving the car.  i've spent a lot of time on the phone with people, and have no issue with that.  with something this involved, i expect a certain amount of hand holding and assistance required.

Can you PM me your number? I went through the directions last night, I am starting to wonder if I have an aftermarket radiator that is taller...

i doubt you have an aftermarket radiator.  more likely he just skipped a step.  all of the multiple angles and such require that things be done exactly as in the instructions.  it takes very little in variance to result in things not fitting right.

i'll email you my number.  i don't use the PM system.

When i had some work done post install my mech was also concerned about the long bolts piercing ghe rad so he used shorter ones  no problems before or since

I also have the sag coming off idle.  made sure the hose was not kinked. Still there. Only when cold so not a big deal.

The extra hp and torque are fun eh?

I didn't want to say anything yet, till I talk with Bob, but I think I have a vacuum leak and/or not getting full boost, after the 65 miles, and coming to a stop car nearly stalled, so I am going over all the intake fittings, etc. Looking forward to get everything set up, as one of the reasons I purchased the kit was to stop me from buying a Cayman GTS which I loved the power when I drove it! For the last 3 years car has been 100% and tracked, no funny problems or weirdness. So hoping it is something simple!

Just to be clear, this is NOT a comment on the kit, just the side affect of not having the space or the time do do all my own work (and some of the tools)and having someone else do the work.

If the car almost stalls as you're coming to a stop, I think your theory of a vacuum leak somewhere is a pretty solid one . Very similar experience I had recently and it was a vacuum issue, so start checking hoses and connections ...

no worries.  a very common reason for stalling is either a vacuum leak, or a crimped ICV hose.  it is extremely critical that the ICV hose be free of any squeezing.  the ICV is undersized, and needs to have access to all the air it can get.

Still need to straighten some things out, but had a question for the group.

At idle, what is the "Normal" sound I should expect to hear from the supercharge.  Car is much louder with it at idle, want to know what is good vs bad before I question noises such as belts, idlers etc.

Any recorded audio is good!

it shouldn't make a lot of added noise at idle.  there is a bit of "whirring" but that's about it.  you do have an exposed air filter, as opposed to the enclosed one, so there will be a bit more intake noise, but the supercharger itself should be fairly quiet

Another question, is there a picture of the elbow "notch" from the intake to the charge pipe?  My directions I think reference a picture, but it is missing.

Thanks Guys, here is a video of what mine sounds like.

I had the belts, rollers, waterpump changed, so wondering if that is what is making the noise...

It is a noise I didn't have before.  It is a steady sound and RPM dependent.
