in california it seems it is a correctable $10 fine (before you add all the penalties and such) - they just amended the law to allow GPS door to door nav systems and toll road devices, but were very careful not to include radar detectors

Back to the law - what an idiotic, absurd piece of legislation this is. So if radar detectors themselves do not violate the law, they're making sure it becomes a PITA for drivers to mount them ...velcro on the windshield would really suck..

All joking aside, I personally can't stand seeing anything mounted to the windshield (or on top of the dash for that matter) other than the rearview mirror. I even hate the inspection stickers in the lower left corner (PA). So, I would really not have a problem with the law from that standpoint. My problem is with the regulation of it in general. Waste of taxpayer's money as far as I am concerned.

Did someone do a study which showed a higher accident rate for cars with such things versus cars without?? Or is this just the result of a bug up someone's @ss?

Certainly yes to both,

1. Our wonderful California legislators probably spent $50M in a study.
2. These same people have bugs all over their body.
(In case you don't get the news, the Calif. government is completely out of control. They just doubled YES DOUBLED the annual car registration fee for no justifiable reason other than they want more money.)

lol - i get the idea behind the law - stuff on the windshield is dangerous - it blocks vision, as well as presents a danger when it pops off of there and flies around the cabin (i've had this happen)

what i don't get is that they allow a GPS unit with up to a 7" screen

clearly the garmin lobby is stronger than the radar detector lobby

so now i get to design yet another freaking bracket - woohoo

gave up on making a bracket - no place to put it that worked well - thought about a mount on the dash - nope - no place to put it that it worked well - no level spot - nothing that won't be in the way of the tonneau cover - thought about suspending it from the windshield frame - nope - either in the way, or too far back to see it - thought about the left side - nope - can't get the right angle to get the signals well

i guess i'll take the ticket

I've planned on experimenting with gluing a BEL bracket to the windshield with superglue to avoid the frequent suction cup replacements due to Arizona heat. If it doesn't work or look good the glue should be easily removable with a razor blade.

I could never get the suction cups to stay stuck. So I have a simple bracket centered on the dash that positions the detector high enough to miss the wipers and low enough to be out of my view. And no, no drilling was required..

i'd like to see that - this is making me a bit nutty - there is a space between the dash and the windshield, but i think the detector i have chosen is going to have a problem on any bracket i can come up with that wouldn't interfere with the tonneau cover

I don't like the suction cup mounts myself - never did. So I put some little rubber footies on my RD and then set it on a grippy thingy I got at Pep Boys. Works great until you decide to have a little fun. Damned thing goes flying all over the place. So I finally dug around for the suction cups LAST WKEND. Routed the wired nicely down the headliner and A-pillar covers - very neat. Now this......

Odd thing is now that I have it mounted higher (basically right behing the RVMirror) I am getting a lot of laser alerts - I think they are false. Had a couple today on the way in and I was doing 85+, so I presume they are false. Cloudy day. Anyone know what may be triggering the alert?

i've been told, by somebody who knows, that laser almost never falses - however sunlight can set it off - not sure how those can coexist, but that's what i've been told

you may be getting a refractive thing through the windshield (it is safety glass after all) try tipping the unit down in front just a snitch

I have my Valentine hard wired. It is on a bracket above the rear view mirror. The only problem is that it blocks the light, but I can live with that. It is in a place that is not easily seen by the POLIZEI as they are illegal in Virginia.
