lower balance shaft leak
#1

HI Guys,

I washed the entire bottom of the engine and ran it for a while I was under it and noticed a leak coming from lower balance shaft at the back of it where the cylinder thing is. Does anybody have a DIY on this gasket replacement??I will check Clarks as well.

Thanks

I think rdhayward posted a thorough description of the lower balance shaft gasket replacement. I think this is a common problem - I know mine leaks a little, as does my rear seal. The lower shaft seal gasket replacement is a pretty big job, as I remember, but probably well worth it. Do a search, and I'm sure you'll find it. Good luck.

Yep, this is a common problem that should be easily found in the search. What many have done to fore-go seal replacement [or temporary fix] is apply an oil resistant RTV to the rear cap. Thoroughly clean the perimeter of the cap using alcohol [or other solvent that will remove the oil] and apply RTV to the gap around the perimeter of the cap. I did this over 2 years ago and haven't had a drop of oil since... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Thanks Guys for the reeplies.

Im goionf to hit it with some Carb cleaner and try the RTV and see if that works.

Thanks Again

Hmm, carb cleaner is a harsh solvent and may attack what's left of the seal. I would suggest something less agressive like IPA [isopropyl alcohol] or methanol.

Is the rear cap seal the primary source of the leak? On mine, it's hard to tell, since the balance shaft cover pretty much has a continuous film of oil along its entire length. Thanks.

On my car it was definitly the rear cap. After washing the whole undercarrage with degreaser and running it up on the lift it was very clear it was coming from the rear cap. I cleaned it and put the RTV and tried it today and it appears problem is solved. Im going to take it for a little ride tomoorw and put it back on the lift and see if im allset, But im pretty sure I am.

I would suggest cleaning with a cleaner and running the car while under it and see if you see the oil dripping from it like I did. If its leaking it will be very obvious.

Good Luck
