Replacement head unit with 10 spkr system
#21

i have a 93 coupe with the CD-2 and 10 speaker option.

my CD-2 was getting pretty tired when i took it out.

i removed the 2 amps under each seat and the 8 pin cable at the same time.

the way the car is wired is that the speaker lines are right behind the head unit even if you have the 10 speaker option.

the headunit runs the amps, then the speaker lines come back up behind the headunit to go to the speakers.

i replaced my CD-2 with a standard kenwood cd/mp3 unit.

and used the amps in the kenwood to run the 10 speakers.

it's simple and it works good.

seperate amps would be superior.

does any one make some nice modern amps the size of the old ones to fit under the seats?

a solid little 2 x 30w kind of thing?

seems like all the newer amps are way to big to fit under the seats

Good to know, thanks. I was going on previous 944 knowledge. You had to pull the windows on those.

Which Kenwood are you using? How much power does it have? I worry that the head unit like driving such a low impedence load.

i have the kenwood KDC-MPV619.

i tapped right into the speaker wires and have using that way for about 3 years now. the specs say 4x50w (yeah right) but it seems to drive the speakers as well as the 15 year old alpine amps did.

Just got done putting a small Kenwood amplified tube in my 94 coupe.

The rear speakers do have built in amps. The drivers have a shield on the backside with the amps inside of them and two leads for the small speakers next to them. You have to remove the rubber covers on the latch posts for the rear seats, the seatbelt mount the thin ceiling trim panel (mine is losing it's glue anyway and i will be fixing that soon) and there are 3 screws to remove (the ones with little black caps.)

We tapped into the speaker on the passenger side for speaker level inputs for the kenwood because it has inputs for them. I'm using the stock tape deck and 6 disc changer. The car is for sale so no new head unit right now...

7 wires going into the rear speakers...

So the original amps are below the driver and passanger seats?

- are the original amps easy to remove? how to remove seats?

- how big space there is for new amps? I've planned to buy new amps for Sub + few new speakers, and the new amps would be replaced to the original places, if possible.

- I noticed it too that there were red and yellow wires behind the head unit, along with the 8PIN DIN. So, is it correct that if I connect the red and yellow cables correctly to the new headunit DIN, I could forget the 8PIN DIN, and the speakers would work ok too? This would bypass the OEM amplifiers?

they are underneath the carpet too - not much space - the amps are small - i found nothing in the aftermarket arena that would fit there and allow the seat to go down
