I put some sound deadener in the rear, have not quite finished the rear wheelwells yet. I was wondering,Flash when the mat was installed in the doors, was it next to the door skin, or just behind the inner door panel?

it was inside the door, almost completely covering the outermost skin - 2 pieces - one above the bar and one below - this cancels the resonance that occurs inside the door, which is what makes the front speakers sound so inadequate - merely covering the skin behind the door panel, while easier to do, won't do that

I'm gratified to learn that you didn't simply put the mat on the plastic "skin" behind the door panel - I was picturing how difficult that would make it to reinstall the door panel with the thickness of the mat impeding getting the fasteners to hold. However, having just spent some time working on the door to R/R the handle mechanism, it strikes me as quite challenging to get the mat inside the door and against the outer skin - especially if the sticky part of the mat is exposed while this is being done. What's the "trick"?

It was not that difficult to get the pieces into the door when I did it this past year.
You need to get the plastic sheeting out of the way, however.
I may have done it in more than 2 pieces to get max coverage.

One observation from my experience is that taking time to seal up the plastic sheeting, as air tight as possible, makes a HUGE difference in road noise.
I also replaced the foam insulation around the door release handle with foam weather stripping of about the same size that I bought at Lowes, and fixed a few broken and missing fasteners in the speaker bracket etc.
These things made at least as big of a difference as the sound deadener (though I wasn't smart enough to use the high quality sound deadener and will likely be going back in to replace it with the Dynamat Extreme).

lol - it is a bit of a trick

first you have to peel back the plastic everywhere you can

then, you cut the pieces full length and then fold them in half, shiny side together

then you just slip it in one hole on one end while reaching in from the other side to pull and guide it through - go slowly and evenly, keeping it from touching anything

carefully put it in place, but only allow a tiny spot at a time to touch the sheet metal so that you can move it around into position - when you think you have it in place, then tap it down into position - then take the roller and work it in

i've done a few now, so i have the knack of it, but the first one was a fun time full of four letter expletives and some wasted material

Hmmm...certainly something for me to think about - quickly. My driver's door is still not fully assembled - the door panel is on but the armrest screws are not in place (those are no fun!) and the lower speaker is also not it. Regrettably, though, winter is here for the moment - we had snow yesterday, and I have to work on the car outdoors. Thinking, thinking...

For the moment, all I'm possibly looking at is the mat inside the driver's door. I need to get the car back together and usable - so it'll be one small step at a time.

I am just wondering about future dents in the doors. I think we all suffer from dents occurring in the doors and If you stick dynamat on the door skins won't paintless dent removal become much harder?

yes, but i'd rather have the better sound all the time, than worry about a door ding i have yet to receive
