Stereo help
#1

Stereo experts - I need some advice, I'm not getting any sound out of my front speakers - I've check the wire connections at both the head unit (Alpine 9887 - which I really like) and the speakers and all seems to be good...but I only get sound from the rear speakers and my sub woofer...thoughts?

Thanks
Sam

I am/was planing to do Flashes rear speaker enclosure improvement as well as upgrade of the speakers along the lines of xrads system(I already have the MA 529c for the front) still looking at my rear options...

This is pretty basic but sometimes the easy things bite you. My wife was fiddling with my radio and through out the F/R balance. Have you checked balance setting?

If wires continuity check out ok for the front speakers just swap connections with other speakers and see if the problems follow the speakers or the output. If the problem follows the output you may have a radio/amp issue I would imagine.

Strange that both sides front speakers are out.

John,

No its not the fader - first thing I checked
I tried one of the new MA's and no sound from it either - so I'm guessing its the deck. I would have though I would lose a channel (left/right) not front to back though

Bob,

Its an Alpine CDA-9887 - As far as I know they both went at the same time or at least when I noticed it they we're both not working - I didn't notice any fading, so I would guess it went at one time. No changes to the system - plan to change the speakers , I hadn't yet.

Thanks Sam

check to see if there is a setting in the deck to choose between built in amp and external amp - a lot of decks do and when it gets switched to external, the built in outputs stop working

Ok, I going with its the deck...we went out this evening and it shut its self off after about 10 minutes and then it would come back on all by itself - last about 5 more minutes and then off again...it acts like its over heating except it isn't getting hot (first time it did it I was listening to a CD so when it came back on I ejected the CD is it wouldn't get stuck inside and it wasn't even warm) and the deck its self doesn't feel warm to the touch???

Thanks again Sam

Sound like the deck is hooped. That's a sign of the current limit cct. kicking in. I would think the PA that drive the front section is probably shorted. It will be a hybrid FET amp and probably more of a pain to try and fix than to get a new deck as the part will have to be sourced from OEM.
IMHO.

likely it is indeed shot - however, a dead short at a speaker, or in a speaker line will do that too

disconnect the front speakers and see if it powers up and stays up

disconnect the speaker wires from the deck and verify continuity

no point in repairing the deck though - they are almost as expensive to fix as to replace, assuming you could even find somebody to work on it

Ok its not the Alpine...thought I do now have a brand new 9887...plugged it in and still have the same problem - no sound from the front...so I did the elementary test of connecting a speaker directly to the Alpine harness and I have sound...so now I assume it must be a wiring problem. How hard is it to pull and rewire the speakers? and if I'm going to do the fronts should I do the rears at the same time? I'm thinking this will be a full weekend job including doing Flashes rear speaker enclosure and laying down some B-quiet through out the hatch area...

pretty easy to do the fronts actually - use a coat hanger or something to fish the wire through the rubber boot in the door jam

the rears are tougher, and you have to either run along the door sill, or down the trans tunnel
