Steering pump bracket broke.....again

Those brackets suck. This is my 4th. I'm thinking I have too much vibration which are loosening the bolts and then braking the adjuster. Looks like one of my motor mounts is almost gone. I'll replace see if that fixes my problem.....I hope. Has anyone else had problems with the bracket adjustment?

the bracket or the adjuster has broken on a number of cars - the cause is almost always somebody trying to adjust the belt without first loosening the mounting bolt and/or forgetting to tighten it back down after adjusting

That's basically what happened here. The bolts came loose (by too much vibration I'm assuming) and with that additional pressure on the adjusment is busts, then all hell breaks loose....literally. Do you know when the motor mount(s) start to collapse, will you start getting vibration fromt he motor? Why are these bolts loosening.....doesn't make sense.

you can, but you'll feel it, especially at idle

if the bolts are loosening, i would say the threads are shot - replace them - loctite them with 242 (not the permanent stuff)

also, check the alignment of the pulleys and make sure neither of them, nor the pump shaft is bent

I had mine break the same way this fall. I'm guessing it lost the rear bolt and spacer somehow then vibrated until it broke the front of the bracket and tossed the PS belt (never felt a thing prior to that). That's the second time that rear bolt has come loose and fallen out, I'm apt to think it's a poor design for that bolt/spacer.

I still have to pull the bracket out really inspect it, I'm going to see if I can get it welded up hopefully stronger and better; and maybe eliminate the spacer somehow.

not pretty, but they worked well. I ran the S motor pretty hard (6 or 7 k multiple times a lap). The vibration would kill the OEM stuff pretty quickly. Pete (RSB) suggested that I had a balance shaft out of time (which I did) and this may have been the reason for the multiple breaks in both the PS and Alt braces.

When I first installed the 968 engine in my 944, Racers Edge warned me to replace the front pully with my S2 one otherwise vibration would be a problem under racing conditions.

The two pulleys looked the same so I kind of ignored the warning and went on to break a series of these power steering brackets and the alternator one as well. I then remembered the advice, changed the front pulley to the S2 one which turned out to be a lot heavier, and I have never had anything break since.

pulley rigidity and alignment is VERY critical - it takes very little flex or misalignment to produce a lot of stress

this has been a large part of the supercharger project - getting them all just right is quite the task

Dubai, are you running a light flywheel?

I wouldn't thing a stock set-up would have this problem if settings on b/s belts were good.

I know the S2 had the harmonic balancer, but it didn't have the dual-mass flywheel.

i've had the 12lb flywheel now for about 25k miles - no issues or signs of any - i don't think that's it, nor do i think vibrations from elsewhere cause it - i think it's either an alignment issue or perhaps a pulley balance issue

i have two theories:

1. the pulleys are steel and quite heavy - it wouldn't take much to be out of balance - that vibration would be very localized though, as it would lack sufficient mass to oscillate the engine - it might be enough to stress the mount though

2. misalignment

i think there are a few possible culprits:

one would be the crank pulley for the power steering - it would unfortunately also be the hardest to see if it were bent - we are talking about a few thousandths of an inch too - that is all it would take down there

the other and more likely culprit is the mount or hardware itself - being aluminum, it could be deformed, causing a misalignment - the hardware could also have enough slop to allow that - so could the hole in the mount

the large pulley is beefier, and hub mounted, therefore less likely to be bent, but it is possible

play in the shaft could do it too

i have the aluminum power pulleys there, and the reduced mass and more accurate design likely prevents any such vibration or misalignment

I replaced the tensioner a few weeks back. Was under the car today and noticed it had broken again. Not sure what's going on here other than it might have been on too tight.

bummer - but, that's exactly why i made the new one - the stupid fixed ends suck - as soon as that bracket gets the least bit out of plane, the tensioner snaps - i really need to work on a better bracket too
