Need advice on the oil/coolant mixing
#1

Hi Guys,

It's been a while since I visited the forums. I have been going back and forth about selling my 968. I have been posting it off and on since last Nov. I really want to keep it but just a 3 weeks ago, I noticed there was some mixing of oil in my coolant expansion tank. There is no smoking, no loss of power, no stumbling, I see no coolant residue on the dipstick. Oil cooler seal was replaced a couple years ago. Car still runs very strong still. Needless to say I have stopped driving it though. Only took it out for a test drive this morning for a prospective buyer. There is definitely oil in the coolant tank though. And I started losing oil after only 300 miles. I thought I try to sell it thinking it was just the head gasket starting to let go but now I have a bunch of prospective buyers throwing all kinds of excuses at me why I can't sell the car for what I'm asking, including saying that it is a cracked head. The price reflects a full head gasket and valve job and timing belt, etc, but not full bearing job that someone told me that Porsche recommends. In the time I have owned it, I have never suffered overheating or anything of that nature. Can it be a bad head? I have been trying to find posts regarding cracked heads on here but haven't really found anything. The only recent thing I have found was seeing Flash's headgasket replacement. I feel frustrated and feel like an idiot. People are making me feel my car is worth nothing. Sorry just venting a little. I know that there really isn't any way to tell for sure until we pull the head but I need advice from guys who know 968's better than anyone else. I appreciate any input.

Thanks,
Brian

No one can blame you for your frustrations. Howver, your prospective buyers have a legitimate concern. Could be a head gasket, could be a cracked head, could be a cracked cylinder wall or could be a gasket in the oil/coolant heat exchanger. The cost of repair of those items is vastly different, and you don't know until you start troubleshooting.

It's difficult to sell a car like ours with a problem like this. I'm guessing that you'll either have to have it fixed before you sell, or set the price very, very low.

OTOH, if you're mechanical and have time, you could fix it yourself using the resources on this board. I don't necessarily recommend this, but it was what I did.
