Speaker recommendations ?
#1

One of my projects for the '68 is a new speaker system. I have my desired head unit and I know need to consider speakers.

Here are some of my criteria- mind you, I am not an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination...

1) Relatively inexpensive- something available from say Crutchfield or equivalent

2) Would prefer simple component-type systems for front and rear

3) Currently have the 10 speaker option, but am not worried about using stock locations per se

4) Not looking for over-the-top, bling bling housing covers and the sort- classy and understated are the words to use

5) If I do use amps, they will be modest in terms of power (100W or less)

6) Looking for decent sound from CDs, satellite, and iPod - FM/AM broadcasts mean nothing to me

7) No sub - I find that I get enough bass for my liking from a decent set of rears

8) I do not intend to reuse anything (wiring, speakers, amps, etc.) that came with car except for the head unit power and ground wires - I'll run my own speaker wires (and amp wires if I add amps)

I was thinking some of the basic Infinity or Polk component systems would be good.... I have plenty of room in the door panels for mounting a component system. I'll find room in the rear without issue as well.

Also, I am not above making existing openings in metal bigger if need be (such as the rear speaker locations).

So whaddaya think?

hang on a couple of days if you can - i am changing out my entire system right now (waiting for fedex as we speak) - i'll let you know how it sounds - will be done tuesday

on the new cab, i installed a set of JL audio 6.5" woofers and 1" tweeters up front - not too bad - i used foam enclosures behind them - drove them from the deck - not big bottom end, but nice and warm

lol - probably selling it - i already yanked the 4x6 speakers from the rear and put them in another car - what is still coming out are:

2 - 4" OEM woofers

at least 2 - 1" OEM tweeters, maybe 4

2 infinity reference 512i 5.25" speakers

2 punch 8" woofers

i already have available:

2 yamaha 4x6 speakers

factory 2 channel amp

audiovox xm system

pioneer D1

parrot CK3100

sub built into cab storage boxes with twin 10" woofers

I've got a little time to say the least.... It's way too cold here to be doing work on the car in my garage! Besides, Pete has it for a couple of weeks.

I won't tackle the stereo until probably April. And knowing me, and how lazy I am, April could rapidly turn into September! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/unsure.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I'm in the same boat. Currently have an old Pioneer head unit and some low end Pioneers in the front. Stock 4x6's in back I think. The sound system sounds like CRAP.

Flash , do you recommend those Yamaha 4x6s? If so I'll buy them from you. I was also looking at the Infinity Reference 6422cfp 4x6s.

The head unit currently in the lead for me is Pioneer DEH-P5000UB - USB and aux inputs, and ~$150-200 so a decent price. I figure I'll spend real money on a 2-din gps unit etc etc when I know exactly what I want.

thoughts??

the yamahas sounded ok, but if you are changing out speakers, you can do better on low frequency response - i'd let these go for a 6 pack of newcastle though, so if that is the criteria, it might fit the bill - i also have a pair of the foam enclosures for them here too

naah, I'll spend real money and get something decent. You think those Infinity's are the right choice?

Also, I have been trying to find the foam enclosures on crutchfield but they don't list anything for 968's. Where should I be looking for the foam enclosures?

no, they don't list anything for the 968 - you have to know what you are looking for already - try installation accessories

the infinity 5012i is a decent speaker - i liked them just fine - not the lowest response, but not bad either, definitely a plus over stock - a good budget choice - good match to deck power, and fit the hole without modification - the only reason i changed is that i have a cab, want more power, and was looking to add more bottom end to the doors - mine are still sitting on the bench

well, the front of the car is the same - i'm still not sure what comes in the rear, but you have a lot more room to play back there, and if you don't have passengers a lot, for a simple system, i'd stick some woofers back there, on a separate amp, and skip the sub

i am REALLY liking these JL Audio woofers

Which JL Audioa are you liking? They have a few options. I really need to do something with the sound in the cab. It sucks sitting still in the parking lot of a monastary with the top up. #1 project on my list so I am searching the posts for other sound mods

where did you put a 6.5"? do you have that speaker up towards the front of the door? surely it wasn't under the armrest, right?

one of the previous owners had cut up the doors, and removed the oem system - there were holes behind where the mids went that were big enough for a 6.5

Hey Flash,

I just finished adding CDT component speakers with 6 1/2" & 1" soft dome tweeters along with crossovers in the doors along with CDT 6 1/2" coaxial's in the rear deck of my Nissan Spec V (it is my beater commuter car), and they sound fantastic with the 50W/ch Pioneer aftermarket radio I used!! These speakers have carbon treated cloth cones that don't require alot of power to operate like polypropylene type cones. They only cost me $100 for the entire component set and another $100 for the coaxial set, and are of the same quality as JBL.

My question to you is this...after using 6 1/2" speakers in the doors of the 2nd 968 that you recently bought that had the door panels cut with larger openings where the 3" mids were previously located, do you now think it would make for a better sounding system in the 968 to do the same on any of our 968's and just eliminate the original 5 1/4" speakers under the arm rest? (after hearing the system in my Nissan Spec V I'm beginning to think about doing just that, and also adapt the 1" silk dome CDT tweeters into the stock Porsche grille unit like you did along with eliminating the stock Porsche 3-way crossover and instead using the CDT 2-way crossover!!)

What do you think?

By the way, I'm going to retain the stock Nokia 4" speaker & tweeter in the rear enclosures, but have eliminated the internal amps so that they can be powered by the Panasonic 70W/ch radio I have installed in my 968. I'm also working on the twin 10" subwoofer/cubby setup you sent me by sealing in the bottom section via fiberglassing each section closed. With the separate amp powering them it should make for a fairly decent system.

All of this is taking me quite awhile to finish since it took so long to clean all the carpet glue gooey mess out of my 968. It is completely cleaned out now, and I'm now installing Fatmat sound deadner on all the floorboards and the tunnel well so that my carpets can be installed with velco strips such that they are always removable in the future. Man, what a pain-in-the-ass job it was!!!!!!!!!

yes, and no - potentially better, but a bigger airspace that needs to be enclosed - the foam backed enclosures i used on the white car are really too small - i need to fab bigger ones

i did something similar with the nokia boxes in the rear - not too bad at all when i was done

have fun

Flash,

I've also thought about just installing the larger 4" Audiobahn speakers I have (they are extremely large 4" speakers that have a 4 1/4" dia cone & 18 oz magnet), and then just eliminate the tweeter altogether since the rear speaker enclosure box sits lower than is really optimal & are sort of blocked by the seat anyway. I suspect that the front tweeters are all that will be necessary in a small convertible such as the 968 anyway for the high frequencies, but I am not positive about that. Another possibility is to simply mount the separate component Audiobahn 1" silk dome tweeters that came with the 4" speakers somewhere else up as high as possible on the rear side panel itself just above where the speaker enclosure sits and also use the crossover that comes with that component system!

Any thoughts on all that?

just one really - make the box airtight

on a sidenote though, i tried a couple of pairs of really good 4" 2 way speakers in there, and the nokia woofers kicked their butt
