Recommended head gasket type and source
#1

Similar to my question on connecting rods (no responses yet, hmmm......), I'd like to get a consensus as to which type of head gasket is the recommended way to go. Again, in my case, I plan to track my car a lot, and will likely add some type of forced induction in the future, so I want something that will really stand up to the pressure, so to speak. I'm planning to keep the stock 11:1 compression. Thanks.

Wide Fire or Cometic would be your two choices. I have a Cometic on mine and I know a few have Wide Fires on theres.

Thanks; A couple of follow-questions:

Is Wide Fire a brand name? I was under the impression that it was s type of gasket (as in having a wider metal ring at the cylinders), but from your post, it sounds like it might be a brand name.

What's the difference between the Cometic gasket and the Wide Fire?

What are some good sources for these gaskets?

Also, do either of these come as a complete set, including all the seals for the head, or do you have to buy those separately?

Thanks.

wide fire is a line of victor reinz with a wider ring - it only comes in standard thickness

cometic is a brand that makes a number of thicknesses

they do sell sets

check pelican

you do need to first figure out what thickness you need, which is based on the head thickness

Thanks, Flash. With any luck, I'll have the head off this weekend, and I'll take the head to a machine shop to determine which thickness of gasket I need.

Assuming the standard thickness will work for my head, is the wider ring the recommended way to do for a car which is going to see a lot of track use, and possibly forced induction?

pete has everything too, so you could call him and get an answer as to what to get

but yes, the wider ring makes for a better seal for such things
