Alignment tool for pressure relief valve: help needed

Hi All,



I have an oil leak in the oil filter housing area. It leaks only when the engine runs. I suspect it is the gasket leaking, but can it be something else in that area? Can it be the lower balance shaft?

Anyway, I am preparing to eventually replace the gasket by myself. And here the confusion comes: most threads reference the 944 pressure relief valve (PRV) and two-three types of it. I need help in clarifying my questions listed below:



1. What type of PRV a 1992 P968 has? The 1995 PET the 94410703502 part, which looks like the one on the right as picture shows:



2. Does one need to completely remove the housing to replace the gasket? Or is it possible just to unbolt it and fit the new gasket?



3. How does the housing come out: via the top or via the bottom?



4. Does one really need the pressure relief valve alignment tool when assembling back the housing if the PRV valve is the one as pictured above?

Here's a picture showing a little better view of the housing. There are a lot of potential oil leak sources on this thing. Frankly it will be very difficult to change much of anything on this without a lot of disassembly. There simply is so little access to it from any side. A balance shaft housing is also in that area, and it can be tough to see where a leak is. There may be some nimble mechanic with experience that can get in there and change things.

I hope you can find the source and that it is reachable.

I removed my housing when the engine was out, but by the time I refitted it the engine was back in the car because it took forever for parts to arrive in Dubai. Fitting the housing from below the car was relatively easy, so taking it out completely should be also. The one piece oil pressure relief valve is supposed to be susceptible to binding if it isn't aligned properly which is why the tool is recommended. If it wasn't so inconvenient to buy things here I probably would have bought the tool just to be safe.Having said that I put mine in without it and have had no issues. There is a bit of side to side movement available when the housing is tightened up. You can feel the valve binding slightly if you push the housing sidways too much. I did it by feel finding the spot where the valve seemed to go in and out with the least resistance.

Taking it out rom the underside is hard and even not possible when you do not lower the suspension.

How I know? search for the threads and you will see how many of us have still got nightmares.

I kept mine in the car, just unbolted it and pushed it back and dropped the gasket in there. It didn't seem worth it to try and figure out a way to pull the whole housing out of the car. I also didn't use the tool, I just used the valve to allign it. Haven't had a problem with it and it's leak free.

how much of dismantle work did you do to get access to the housing bolts?

Did you have to remove the power steering pump?

Did you have to remove both headers or just the 1st and 4th cylinders one?

It looks like you used a new approach in doing this job. It would be much appreciated if you could take some time and share your valuable experience, write down the main steps.

I have recently done the belts and am curios: how does the belt replacement job compares with the gasket replacement one?

I didn't remove the headers at all, I really didn't want to go there. I also didn't remove the pump, I did have the belt off of it at the time, so I was able to push it out of my was as needed. I pretty much followed the procedure on Clarks Garage with the exception of the headers. Also that procedure is for a 944, so the internals of the housing will be a little different, they use a water cooled oil cooler while we have a external cooler, but the same housing. I pretty much used it as a general guide. http://www.clarks-ga...ual/lube-01.htm Take a look over it and let me know if you have any questions and I will try and recall. I know I loosened up the heat shield but didn't remove it, just kind of pushed it out of my way. It's tight in there, but it's doable. Also the guide says to drain the coolant system, but that isn't necessary on our cars.

The headers are my concern too: I do not want to touch them unless it is required. And a lot of other things too, like power steering pump, HCV, coolant hoses etc. It is that case when trying to fix one issue can result in a bunch of new ones.

I looked over the Clark’s Garage guide. I wish it was for a P968, but it is still good as a general guide.

I have a couple of questions more:

Does the gasket go on the housing or on the block? I saw a picture of the housing and it looked like the gasket had to go into a groove on the housing (the gasket on the picture was old style).

Did you remove the external oil cooler lines in order to push the housing back? The lines (on my car) are pretty stiff.

Do you get any oil or coolant leak when unbolting the housing? I assume I will have to remove the oil filter which will make a little mess, but that is expected.

I believe the gasket went on the housing, you can slip it down in there and put a bolt thru the housing and gasket to hang it on there while you get it back into place on the block. For the oil lines, I unbolted them and replaced the o-rings there, didn't need to bend them or anything, just unbolt them so I could pull the housing back. You will get some oil dropping from the filter and lines, but should haven't any coolant dropping. It's been at least eight months now so some things are a little fuzzy. Once you get in there you will get it, it's all pretty straight forward if you don't try to remove the housing completly from the car.

Just a comment regarding our headers. I'm pretty sure you cannot take out just the 1-4 header without taking out the 2-3, Everything is just too close together to do them individually.
