Sound of my exhaust

Hi all



Today I tried to take some clips of my 968 CS to let you know what my setup sounds like...



I have the RSbarn header, a 100-cell metal cat in the stock shell and a cargraphic catback with a resonator and muffler (all straight through). The clips were taken today, on wet streets. I didnt have anybody to film so the camera was statik on a stick, but I hope it works so you can hear the sound...



What do you think? In my eyes it is way to high...

It sounds very clean: no rasp, no fartiness. Although I was half expecting something with a deeper tone, just curious, do you have the airbox mod too? Unfortunately the wet roads really create a significant amount of unwanted noise and it's hard to get an accurate feel for the sound. But it definitely has more presence than a stock exhaust, even if the headers do give it that honda-ish sound.

the tone could be microphone limitation - this is why i have been reluctant to do any more recordings - what it sounds like with one mic is nothing like with another - similarly, what it sounds like on my studio monitors is nothing like it sounds like on the speakers for the computer



all that said, i tend to think it will still sound a bit like a honda - the header is the issue, and not currently resolvable - also, the twin pipes, by nature, raise the note above what a single larger pipe will be - what they do though is smooth out the tone more than a single pipe will - always a trade-off

Yes, I know, the noise from the street is very loud and the frequency is picked up pretty well by the camera... I will try later on dry roads.



The Airbox mod I have is something different I worked out last dezember when I found the Stock layout was better at high speeds than the comon mod...

It will make free flowing entry to the airfilter while keeping the factory's ram effect. The gains are GTech-proven.



If there is interesst I can post some pics...



I am with you, Flash, concering the twin-pipe design whitch the Cargraphic keeps. I am thinking about welding something on my own.



And yes, I also think the micro limits a bit the tone just like on the clip of my EVO MR which in reality is quite a bit mor aggressiv...;-)

That's an interesting airbox mod.. What material is that made out of..? Nice clean install.

I had considered something similar, but made out of aluminum.

...I made it out of thin steel; bending, welding and this special "shrumpeling color".

Works fine and keeps the ram effect which is significant over 60mls / 100km/h.

kudos for playing with this, and as long as you are willing to give up some power, it's fine - it is clean, but the total open area is reduced to about half of what it is with it open via what most of us have been doing - even though there may be holes behind the shroud, the reality is that it all funnels down to the opening in the sheet metal - that is the aperture size, no matter what is in front of it - i played with this one already - that's actually sort of the way dave and i both ended up getting where we did



we started with just increasing snorkel size - then i made something similar to what you did - then we went to the holes - then i added the front plenum



it's not all bad news though - you will get some ram effect from yours, as you have already noticed, and it does reduce the intake temp - i ended up with a plenum in front of the sheet metal, doing something similar, but still having to leave the holes exposed to keep the surface area up - the engine shroud does a pretty good job of separating the hot air from the cold, but a sheet metal shroud like that would do better



a better solution though would be to cut another hole on the other side, to match the one the oem snorkel went through, and then make a new shroud that encompassed both holes - then you would get the best of both worlds



the other part though is how fun it was to make something for the car, which may outweigh the 4hp "loss" - it's like that sometimes

I took a look at installing a shroud a few weeks back and still haven't come up with a final design. Whatever I do, I won't neck down to the opening in the sheet metal - it's very limiting. I too was looking at adding an opening just to the right of the hood latch. However for some reason, I don't recall the specifically, it didn't seem to be a good idea.



On a side note; it's been in the 30's & 40's lately and my engine sure likes cold air. Most engines do get some boost, the 68 is getting a healthy boost!

...I tried different versions from stock over the "airbox mod" over a complete open airbox in the front to the now instaled version and I found the following using GTech Pro RR:



The "Airbox mod" and a complete open version is slightly better then the stock snorkel but only up to 100km/h and in cold conditions. Over 100km/h and at high temperatures the stock snorkel performed better. Infact, the faster the bigger the difference due to the obviously messurable RAM effect and inspite of the relativly smal diameter of the snorkel.

So it was clear I had to combine the two worlds: Open the Airbox completly in front and still keep the RAM effect. That's what led me to the present solution. Satisfaction was great when I found theory transfered to reality; the solution is equal to an open box under 100km/h and superior to it (and the stock snorkel) over 100km/h...

i love this stuff - too much fun developing things



however, this is one of the reasons that the trim rings are important - the right ones do the same job as the bell mouth of the snorkel (the wrong ones don't - no rings at all is bad)



there is no real ram effect on the oem snorkel - what is there is a venturi effect from the bell mouth - the bell shape is critical to increasing velocity and reducing turbulence



i tested many variation of this (i have a box full of mock ups and prototypes), from different sized snorkels, to no rings, to with rings, to no engine cover, to with engine cover, to airbox insert modules, to a full plenum, and everything in between - tests were on the dyno, with a manometer, with thermometers, and using a g-tech



yes, ram effect is helpful - i have always felt this, and have always been a proponent of it



no, a snorkel and shroud isn't better off the line than an airbox mod



no, it isn't better with a snorkel and shroud than it is with a full airbox mod and similar effect of a shroud provided by the engine cover



yes, it can be better than drawing hot engine bay air into the airbox mod at freeway speeds



you will see this difference between the ram effect and airbox mod at road speed dramatically lessened with warmer ambient temperatures



there is a formula for how much horsepower is presented with each degree of intake temp lowering



there are a lot of things to be taken into consideration before jumping to any conclusions - i am continuing to work on the intake, and have made some more improvements, and still have a couple more left to do
