Rim Weight
#1

I just had the chance to weigh my rims without the tires on them...So now I know how much they actually weigh!

18" BBS monoblock magnesium rims...

Front rims are 9" X 18" = 15 lbs!

Rear rims are 11" X 18" = 18 lbs!

That is great Jason, my OZ 18 inch wheels are quite a bit heavier. Fronts weigh 22 pounds and rears weigh 27 pounds! Add the tires to that and there is a lot of weight to turn and stop. good luck, Bob blackwell.

what kind of scale did you use? that's awfully light, even for magnesium - even lighter than they publish on their rims

that would sure be cool though, and i may be rim shopping

Bob,

The scale was something they had at my mechanic's place...One fellow stood on it and they took his weight as the baseline; and then they handed him the 2 different rims to see what the incremental was. Then they tried the other method...where they just put the rim on the scale by itself, and got the same answer.

Another guy (who is having a race car built at the shop) bought my second set on the spot!

I don't know what BBS states as the weight on their race rims; but I was really surprised!

lol - i do the same thing all the time to weigh stuff

very interesting - i can see why he snapped them up - i would have likely done the same thing - i've been thinking a lot about that lately - a few pounds there is a big deal - i just found tires that will drop me 3lbs each, and can't wait to shred these

the last time i checked with bbs, in magnesium, i believe the fronts were quoted at 17 and the rears were 19 - 2 lbs more in aluminum - very nice to see they are lighter, and you now have me thinking more about this - thanks a lot!

one thing to look for and check out in your race class - some race organizations are now requiring age certs on rims in some classes, and not allowing older rims on the track (similar to harness regs)

by the way - here is a list i had of BBS rim weights - god help me if i can figure out which one is yours though:

Bob,

My wheels are referred to in the BBS site as "Forged Magnesium RE

Monobloc (18” Dia)"

You have to look in the racing wheel section to find them. I think you probably have been looking in the "street" section.

Thanks,

Jason

well, actually, when i was looking into it a while back, it was over the phone - that was just a list i managed to find in searching, because, like yours, i could not find what i was looking for in the list

anyway, sounds like you have something very cool there, and i would love to see a pic

i went to that page, and then further to the other pics - i see aluminum ones, and a cast magnesium center one, but no forged magnesium monoblock - is it the E26 or the E28, or the mazda spec wheel? am i being completely dense?

i guess i'll have to wait for the snow to thaw

Hi guys

Wow, 15lbs F/ 18lbs R is REALLY light. I, too, am very impressed.

If price is no object.....

and if you MUST have a lightweight wheel, you guys should check out the Rennworx-DYMAG magnesium/carbon-fibre rims.....18" rims at about 14lbs! I looked into these rims a while back and found the pricing to be about $9k a set. (Wheel enhancement carries them) Outrageously priced, but the only ones on the market thus far that I have heard about. The DO look the business though. Maybe in a few years when more competitors come on board, the prices will be much more reasonable. But, for those of you who want the ultimate in performance now, these are probably it. IIRC, I think I heard that they are about 10 times stronger than regular forged wheels. And, apparently, the magnesium centerpieces can be replaced if damaged. Only the outer rim is made of CF, and is almost indestructable which comes in handy when you hit all those damn potholes in the city!

you got an 11 under there? what kind of offset and camber angles? - i'll probably stick with a 10, might even go back down to a 9 if i can set the offsets the same, but i am curious about the 11

Volk TE37s are light streetable wheels but I'm not sure how they would look on a 968, Unfortunately it's the only model Volk does for Porsches.

Thingo,

I'm sorry that I don't...I bought them from a team out of Toronto...we tried them on my car and they fit.

Seems there was a rule change and they couldn't use them.

I simply bought them after that.

They should be great wheels. I'll be curious to see how durable they are. Magnesium race wheels won't live forever if they are used often.

Any reason for this? I've heard magnesium wheels should be more durable than aluminium ones - they won't bent. Of course, when they broke, they'll break quite completely. any evidence on this?
