wheel fitment question, weight, and width
#1

so I found these on craigslists...

[Image: 011502010307011611200711193f0334c7d2b6ea21a300ebc9.jpg]

with this information:

Used set of boxster S wheels. Came off 2004 boxster S. Genuine Porsche. Carerra Light wheels. sizes are Front:7.5 X 18 50mm offset 99636213405 with tires(225/40 18 Pirelli Rosso)more than 75% tread left. Rear: 9 x 18 52mm offset 99636213800 no

tires installed. OEM equipment.

I've been considering picking up the carrera lightweight replicas out there that go for about the same price. Those would obviously be 18x8/18x10, but seem to have a weight disadvantage, at least compared to the 996 wheels.

Does anyone know the weight of the narrower wheels, have any input on the difference in width, or can confirm they'll fit my car? Thanks

Hi there,

Genuine 996 Carrera lightweights are 8x18 50mm offset for the fronts and 10x18 65mm offset for the rears.

So those Boxter lightweights would sit 6mm deeper at the front compared to 996 lightweights. At the rear there is no visual difference between Boxter and 996 wheel. So yes they will fit in 968.

Very nice wheels for the money. I bought my 996 set used and they are hands down best bang for the buck I could find when comparing the weight vs. price. And it doesn't really hurt that they are original Porsche parts either!

any thoughts on the handling characteristics of the car with a slightly wider profile tire up front relative to the rear? would this bring on more understeer?

the front track increase isn't that huge, so i doubt you'll notice anything

the only thing that bugs me about those wheels is how small they make the rotors look

need to watch the tire size too - i saw them on a car that had tires that were too tall, and it looked a lot like one of those early eagles

lol - yes, but pretty much cancels the weight savings of the wheels

Got a response from wheelenhancement regarding weights and such.

7.5x18" 20 lbs. 9 oz.

9x18" 22 lbs. 13 oz.

He did say that a 1/4" spacer is needed up front

don't know why - i have 57mm spacing up front, on a 9" wide rim, and have no clearance issues

a 1/4" spacer would push that rim pretty far out - not sure it would sit under the fender

isn't there a hub bolt or something up front? I've heard mention of clearance issues that way before. I suppose it'd be easy enough to pick them up, try 'em on the car, and if a spacer is needed, pick that up.

interestingly, a 1/4" spacer would be perfect to pick up the 6mm difference in offset between the 18x8" front and the 18x7.5"

any suggestion on tire size? the fronts apparently have 225/40's on them, but the rears have nothing. So I'd be tire shopping, at least for the rears.

I wonder how much my stock wheels would sell for... bet they'd look good on a 944.

Heheh,

That's true about the rotors looking small.. and I even have big blacks in there So better make it GT2/3 brakes then..

And there is definately no need to use spacers with those boxter wheels. I used to have 8.5x18's with 52 offset at the front before the current wheels and I had no issues.

Saxman, what type and size wheels are you thinking of selling? There seems to be a lot of interest on the Cup I (flat spoke) wheels that came on the '92 and '93 968. Depending on condition and size they are probably worth $400 to$800 in average condition. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Who knows the proper nomenclature... seems these porsche wheels all have 50 different names

They're the stock wheels from my 94 968. 16" diameter. I believe they're the cup 1s. Here's a couple photos(although not stellar).

which ones are the cup 1 wheels then?

none

C2 5-spoke 16" (the 16" oem wheels)

C2 Turbo (the first 17" oem wheel used on the 968)

993 Cup (the second 17" oem wheel used on the 968)

somewhere along the line somebody started calling them cup 1,2,3 - it got picked up from there - not sure where - possibly overseas origination - they call stuff a lot of different things than we do here (boot vs trunk - bonnet vs hood, etc)

technically i am not sure that any of the names are accurate, since the offsets are different between the C2, the 993, and the 968 - the basic design is shared, but not truly the same wheel, even though the part numbers are correct for the 911 series

dizzy enough yet? i think i need a drink

so these are the "cup 1" that bob was referring to, regardless of if the nomenclature is correct?

based soley on the comment regarding the limitation of years (the 16s came on all years), i think the ones that bob is referring to are 17" and what has been misnomered as "cup 1" - i have seen them recently sell as high as 1200 for a set of real ones

the 16 are pretty common, and generally go for less - probably a good market on the 944 boards though - may take a while, as those guys generally have less disposable cash

I have heard other people mention the 16"s going in the $600 range... I figure if I can get $500 for 'em, and pay for half of the 18"s, I'll be sitting pretty.
