So while I am in here, the right side cooling fan doesn't spin freely - was a known problem. I did some some searches here on the forum, and looked on Clark's garage, but didn't see a real detailed procedure. It is likely very straight forward, but I was hungry for a bit of the procedure. Here is what I think, but could use confirmation. As far as I can tell the basic process is that the cooling fan and fan shroud combination is unbolted and then dropped down.
- Run the standard debug checks like on Clarks garage and other parts of this 968 forum to make sure the electrics are working.
- Remove the air filter whole unit, and the black mounting bar that holds the rear part of the air cleaner housing. (to gain access to the screws that mount the top of the fan shroud.
- In the case of the tip, underneath remove the pipe that goes from the ATF cooler on the left side to the right side of the radiator (else the fan shroud won't drop down).
- Unbolt the fan shroud, I see 3 bolts on the bottom of it, assume there are 3 on the top also.
- Drop the whole thing down, replace motor, I assume the fan comes off of the motor shaft somehow, and it looks like the motor is screwed to the shroud somehow.
- Replace it all, top off the ATF as needed.
Is that about all there is to it? Hard to tell my my inspection, are there 2 shrouds, one for each motor, or a single shroud for each fan? The PET seems to show a shroud that can hold only one motor? Can someone confirm the need to remove the ATF pipe, or is there a way to squeeze by it? Any hints from the experienced? Thank you!

I remember taking the shroud (1) from the top after removing the coolant hose(s). It is easier to refill coolant than the ATF.

Oh yeah, thanks Lim, that should work, I guess it should all lift out. I already have all the coolant drained and do not want to remove that ATF pipe again (like I did last summer). Thanks!

Ok, so to close this thread:
It was a fuse! Thanks for the forum here
http://www.968forums.com/index.php?showtopic=1082 was a post from flash in 2005 reminding to check fuse 10 and 15. Fuse 15 was shorted; for months now I was under the "assumption" (which I deemed fact) that the motor was broken. The reason is that one of the shops who did some service diagnosed the fan not working, and told me I better bring it back to "take care of the fan motor", or at least that is what I heard them say. Maybe they meant diagnose and then repair the problem.
So both fans are turning nicely, but the right one is still not spinning as loosely as the left one, so this will be a periodic check once in a while. I found that simply turning the key to the full on position without starting the engine, and then turn on the AC, and both fans turn. Lesson learned: do my homework and there is no replacement for proper diagnostics.
