Functional Diagram of the 968 Cooling System
#1

I have been watching my temp gauge closely lately, as it seems to wander around a bit more than I remember.

While scouring the forum and educating myself on the function of this system, I thought a diagram might help me put it all together.

Here is what I came up with.

I would like to solicit input from the community on what I may have gotten wrong, or ideas for making the diagram more useful.

I had to guess on things like the temperatures corresponding to points on the dashboard gauge.

Comments appreciated.

This is an excellent start and idea! I would love a flow diagram for every system on the car. Paring this diagram with the cooling system DIY we have makes it possible to diagnose almost any cooling problem. I'm sure everyone would love this kind of thing for the sunroof next <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Thanks for the encouragement Dave.

You are right on target saying that this is just a start.

I need help incorporating the heating system and HCV, the overflow tank, and perhaps some more detail on the relay function (including more specifics on things like what makes the fans kick on 5 seconds after the car is shut down).

How about the other temp thresholds on some of the different fan switches and thermostats?

I'm hoping to get some basic descriptions that I can fold into the diagram.

Anybody?

If you make a copy in Google Docs Drawing, everyone can collaborate on it.

+1 great contribution.

FYI Google also has a free 3d rendering tool called sketchup.

Excellent idea!

Unfortunately, I can't seem to use Google Docs from my computer at work...

Looks like it's blocked for security reasons. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Bummer. Don't want to get you in trouble.

I use LogMeIn.com to access my home PC securely (and free), to do those once-in-a-while things. [Image: wink.gif]

You can also poke around some unblocked ports and use RDP if you are inclided that way and not a MAC user <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> . It's built into Windows it tends to be more efficient and functional than third party/freeware products. I use Terminal Services and a VPN/RAS setup to access my home server, bit of overkill but I'm a nerd. Not sure if Dameware has released any and freebees yet, been awhile since I looked.

Perhaps someone will figure out a good process for direct collaboration on the drawing, but for now I was just hoping to get some dialog going.

Anybody know what the different thermostat temperatures are?

Anybody want to take a shot at describing how the HCV fits into the system?

Come on guys!
