Rear wiper problem...
#1

When I bought my car, the rear wiper didn't work. Got the problem fixed today, here's the solution for those interested:

The drive unit for the wiper consists of a motor and a gear mechanism. To inspect the gear mechanism, I filed down the rivets around the edges, removed the single screw, and popped the cover off. If you take a look at the attached picture showing the proper operation, you can see an arm attaches to a large white gear to provide the back and forth movement. However, in my gear mechanism the center pin (see arrow) of the gear had worked its way out and was blocking the path of the arm:

To fix it, I simply tapped the pin back in and reassembled. The seal pretty much got destroyed when I took the unit apart, so I put it back together with RTV sealant. Strangely, beside each rivet is a screw hole, so I picked up the appropriate screws at the local home improvement store. (4M, I think it was)

Now, works like a charm!

Good deal Jon. Much more technically involved than my fix. I just removed it and plugged the hole! Doesn't rain much out here anyway.

The best thing about removing the motor is the hatch pops up under it's own power when you hit the button.
