Rear Wiper - Help!

Apply wax to your windshield and there is little need for a wipers. I also don't take the 68 in the rain, Yet I have a functional wiper back there. Now that I'm weighing the pros and cons (both aesthetically and for function) I'm thinking Wiper delete.

I use the rear wiper all the time, but then again, it's my daily driver and I drive in all seasons. The rear hatch glass is practically flat, thus rain and snow tend to collect and not go anywhere, especially in stop and go stuff.

I'm just ready to pull that darn thing apart though, because it quit on me yesterday in a torrential downpour, at the halfway point of the wiper arms travel. There is a slight movement every 3 seconds or so but it goes nowhere. I think it's the common problem of the pin being out of place, but prior experience with these things tells me to just replace the thing.

Between that and the a/c not functioning due to a bad o-ring and no coolant left in the system, I am just a bit annoyed. I just hate it when even the smallest gizmo doesn't work. And my car looked so fogged over on the inside people were probably wondering what was going on in there..

Let me first say this before everyone chimes in with a suggestion of removing the rear wiper entirely - not interested in that option, ( I have done that in my blue 968 ) but this is a DD car that does gets driven in the rain, it's parked outside so the rear glass needs to be cleared / wiped every morning, yada, yada.

Now, the problem : just as I switched it on this morning it traveled about half way and stopped dead, right in the middle. Pushing the toggle switch does nothing - there is no slight movement of the arm , no sound, just dead as a door nail. I tried to see if I can manually move the arm at all, but it's solidly fixed in place where it stopped. I opened up the box, checked all the wiring connections, everything looks fine. So to me this seems like the fuse ( wherever that may be ) just went . Any other thoughts as to potential culprits ? If it is the fuse, since I guess I should look at that first anyway , how & where do I find which one drives the rear wiper ?

Hi DS, there should be a white sticker on the undersite of the lid of the fusebox, mentioning wich fuse secures what. The fusebox is located under the hood, near the firewall, drivers side.



The fuses are numbered, I just checked my car: you are looking for a 30 amp fuse, nr 28.



You can visually inspect the fuse for a molten wire, but there is also a tester located in the fusebox. When you insert the fuse, a little green light should come on. To be really sure, you could switch the fuse with a spare one.

Oh yeah, the fuse is also hooked to the rear window heating/defroster and reverse lights (among other things). So I guess when your reverse lights function, the fuse is ok.

thanks, will check. ( my fusebox is missing the diagram , but then I just realized my other 968 has it.. d'uh ! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> )

and yeah, i was wondering what else the same fuse might impact ..

just tested it, and it's not the switch. before I source a new motor any other possibilities that may cause a sudden stop like that, a fraction of a secomd after flipping on the switch ?

Sorry, I meant it's not the fuse ( for some reason I wrote it's not the switch )

I'll look for that "pin" in tne drive box though.. Have not seen anything of the sort when I opened the box, but perhaps did not examine it closely enough



Tried to send a message to S-Cal968 , but it's not going through .. not sure what that " pin " looks like and where in the drive box it's located - anyone else know ?

Its been awhile but as i recall its more rod than pin size about the of your little finger...bad design hangs above the rotating arm for the wiper and works its slef loose and blocks the arm from moving...solution is to slide it out clean out its slot and then glue it back in to keep it from sliding out and blocking the arm...not a real technical thing to fix more of a PITA. You can take the motor off and do the work on the dinning room table - wivies love that...

Ah, it's a take the motor out to get to the rod thing .. Got it, will check that out ( weekend project , so I can tell the wife " can't mow the lawn this weekend honey, this wiper motor needs-a-fixin' - they love to hear that also...).

Did you test the motor with an Ohmmeter? That should be quick & easy and could potentially save you a lot of time.

Just saying, if you got a multimeter, the "Ohm" measuring part is usually built in. Even in the cheap ones nowadays..



This one costed me 15€.

It isn't clear from the foregoing if you permanently removed the fuse. If not, do so. If it's the rod issue and the fuse is in place, then your motor is stalled and heating up and draining the battery. In fact, a hot wiper motor is a sure sign it's the rod problem.
