Help With Battery Cables
#1

Please help. I replaced my battery on my 1994 968 Cab. and failed to label the cables after taking them off. Everything is pretty straightforward with the reds however I have a black cable coming out of the firewall (please see photo attached the yellow arrow shows where it comes out of the firewall) and I don't know if it is positive or negative. Because the cable is black it leads me to believe its negative but I seem to remember that there were only 2 negative cables attaching to the negative battery terminal when I disassembled them and this one would be a third. Does anyone have an idea what it can be and if I should hook it up to the negative side or positive? Would any damage be done if I connected it to the wrong side? It's a good size cable that is bundled together with another wire that looks like it goes to the cruise control. I used an ohm meter and placed one lead on the cable and the other on the chassis ground and the meter reads 1.

Hi

I just looked at my car and that cable that comes out the firewall loops back to one of the side posts on the positive terminal

Once you get your new battery in place the natural bend already in the wire will probably help confirm that for you

Let me know if that makes sense. I took a picture on my cell phone that I could post later if that would be helpful

Also, based on the style of the positive terminal post Im guessing thats the original battery cable? The inner shielding on these old cables (but especially the alternator to starter cable) has failed in many peoples cars sometimes with bad consequences , like the car starting up on its own .

Its worth inspecting them carefully, and replacing if theyre crispy and crackly inside.

The battery to starter cable is still available from Porsche, I think. I replaced mine a couple years ago and it wasnt crazy expensive IIRC

Looks like the abs power cable,

On a euro car that cable connects to a cable joiner near the wiper motor, all this stuff is on the other side to you guys

Should be connected to the live

On our RHD cars it's the only cable that goes through the firewall/bulkhead on our drivers side so your passenger side

Thanks MLB and Waylander for responding and going through the bother of looking at your own cars.

MLB- I would appreciate a picture if you have time to upload it. Your right that the natural bend in the wire pointed it back towards the positive post but because the cable is black as is the terminal end I figured it had to be a negative wire because of the color. The terminal post in the picture is new purchased it at Auto Zone. It matched the old one which was pretty corroded and I decided to go with the style that was closest to what was already in the car. The positive cable was replaced 3 years ago when the battery was changed, the mechanic noticed lots of corrosion at the starter end. Appreciated your advise none the less.

Waylander- Thanks also for your reply. I can't tell you how foolish I felt not labeling the wires when I took out the old battery.
