Help with outside temp gauge behavior
#1

There was a post back on this is 2009 but it did not really provide an answer.  I have a low mileage 1994 car and when I got it the outside temp gauge would go dark when the lights were turned on, and then turn back on to celsius when the lights were turned off.  The gauge eventually expired.  I tried to replace the display but was unsuccessful.  I just got another gauge and it does the same thing.  All the wiring checks out - the unswitched and switched 12 volts remain operational when the lights are turned on, and the +12 for the gauge lighting comes on with the light switch.  so all the wiring appears correct.  The post in 2009 indicated that other gauges have had this same issue - going dark when the lights are turned on and then when the lights are off coming back to celsius.

Can anyone confirm is this is a gauge problem or a wiring problem?  The wiring appears right but I can't imagine a gauge operating correctly for a part of the time like this.  Obviously this gauge worked correctly for a while in a car when new, so is this how these gauges age?   and the next step is full dark all the time?  I am fully baffled by this so any help is appreciated.  Thanks

I would have sworn that's a fuse problem. It has been a while, I'll see if I can dig something up.

That's how mine behaves when the fuse blows.

guys - I am aggressively watching for responses.  Which fuse are you talking about?  I have swapped out the fuse which runs the unit, but obviously if the fuse was blown the unit would not operate at all.  Is there another fuse at play here?  please let me know.  thanks

My car is in the shop and I have not access to it right now.  Sorry,

I think the same fuse that the electric plug uses...
