Rear Hatch - Cosmetic Fix
#21

I got another window in a 944 frame for $99.I will take it to a local glass place that has done one of these before. They
will charge $75 an hour and will not guarantee they won't break it but they expect not to. I started taking the car apart
to begin paint prep. I have almost gotten the back clip off.

I'm looking for P/N 951 512 406 00.  It is the "hockey stick" trim piece for the right side of the hatch.  I've been missing this piece for a long time.  I removed it from my 94 968 over 5 years ago when I painted the rear spoiler.  When I started to reassemble I could not find the part.  I later purchased a 93 and sold the 94 since the 94 was a Tip and I really wanted to do the supercharger mod.    I moved the part from the 93 to the 94 to better sell it knowing I  would find the missing part but have not yet to date found it.  I admit  that my shop is somewhat a mess but have no idea what happened to the part. My employment situation has recently changed and guess I am moving toward retirement.  With that in mind I need to loose a couple of toys and will probably be selling the 93 before long.  As I realize that having the part might make it more marketable I would  like to have the part.  Know I will find the old one when I buy another but unless I do, well you know.

Perhaps someone has a hatch with bad glass that would like  to pick up a few bucks from parts.  I would probably buy the hatch to get the part.

When I bought my 968 from Pete of RS Barn he had had the hatch glass redone by some local shop. I would suggest contacting Pete if you are in the area and not wanting to tackle this job yourself. Mine still looks great.

Why Porsche ( not the car, but the company ) sucks ;  I have just received a Mercedes Benz recall notice indicating that the seal / glue between the glass sunroof and the roof panel  “ might deteriorate gradually over time “  and cause some delamination to occur.   Free dealer inspection and of course free repair or reconditioning where necessary,  but here’s the kicker :  this applies to cars as old as 2001 models, when apparently this particular sunroof laminating technology was first used.      Has Porsche ever acknowledged the 968 delamination issue, which is a documented fairly common problem and issue a recall ?   Have they issued a recall for the pinion bearing factory defect, another documented and also sufficiently common problem ?   Both are SAFETY issues.    No, Porsche clearly could not give a flying hoot , once the car is out of warranty .  They would do a recall only if the NTSB would legally compel them to do so, but a good customer relations and reputation preservation voluntary recall ?!   Ha, don’t hold your breath ! :angry2:   Shameful .

Not to mention IMS Bearings on Boxsters, and head bolts shearing on our 911 brethren...

Just to provide a counterpoint - Porsche JUST announced extended warranty coverage on the transfer case issues (widely covered on the forums RL) on Macans and Cayennes - my 2016 Cayenne S (that was out of warranty) now has warranty coverage (directly from Porsche) on it's transfer case again.

Definitely wish they'd of fixed the glass lamination issue on the 968s at some point, but happy my TC on my Cayenne will be replaced if it fails (again, already replaced once under prior ownership) under the new extended warranty timeframe.

in reference to ds968 you are right on. I have Porsches and Benz s always and the Benz people run circles around Porsche for every aspect from sale to maintenance. Benz is serious about any recall notice and having you bring car in for check. Porsche does not want to know any thing about recalls or especially doing some thing to repair the problem that has been my experience. I have replaced a hatch with newwe one with barely and delamination and with in 2 years it is peeling off. And car is kept in garage!

If you guys are interested, I checked with Porsche last year, as a friend of mine went in to get the car out the garage and the hatch had exploded, we think the reason was one latch was not caught correctly and the twist popped the glass, anyway the cost was £4500,00 for a hatch, and they had one in stock!

so that’s about $5250, so don’t break it

the cam belt tensioner has now gone NLA, this is a service item should be replaced at 100k

i have spoken to the manufacturer and they have not made any since the order in 1990, and the tooling is gone

" they have not made any since the order in 1990, and the tooling is gone"

Small item, not much stock space, must be good money selling 1990 production items at 2020 prices!

Quote:Ah but now there are none to be had, and the car is junk without a cam belt tensioner  Is it different than the 944 one ?    I’m thinking you could source one from salvage yards  ( even for the 968 although that would be tougher )  but if it’s the same the 944,  there are hundreds of 944s  and parts in junkyards .

No it’s completely different the the 944, that was a manual device and one of the bolt holes is missing

we are in contact with the maker Aisin Europe, lets see what transpires,

they think there is only 2000 968 left world wide, and it’s not worth the effort to make more

there is also a pressure group on Facebook applying force on Porsche if your on there sign up to it

also the 944 one is still available new

Damn !    :angry2:      With each passing day this car is inching closer and closer to becoming a 3,000 lbs paperweight because of critical  NLA parts .

Willing to bet if I go into a BMW, or MBZ, or Toyota , or GM,  dealer and ask for ANY part for a 1940s era limited edition model they made, they’ll have it for me in less than a week .

I agree it is very frustrating that there are no parts available especially cosmetic type parts and after all the years some of the stuff plastic and such just disintergrate

"they think there is only 2000 968 left world wide, and it’s not worth the effort to make more"......I find that number very low and probably just guess work. I am sure more than half of the production (around 7000) is still alive. However, there is really no way to verify how many that are running in the streets of the world today. The 968 owners generally kept their cars in much better shape and maintained than most 944 owners.

I too was thinking about some advance purchasing.... did you just get the lifter, or the whole assembly?
