Rear Fog Lights
#1

Hi I have decided to fit the fog lights on the rear of my 92 coupe 'properly' The Car came into the UK from Singapore in 1999, and was not fitted with rear fog lights!, a 'bodge' lamp had been fitted into the offside rear cluster, and a cable run up to the single front fogs switch on the dash by the ignition switch, so when the front fogs were 'on' so was the single rear 'fog' lamp.

Well I acquired from a well known auction web site, a 968 rear fog switch, and fitted it into the blanking space next to the front fog switch. found the loom for the new switch tucked away behind the dash, and fitted a new pair of rear light looms, which included the pair of rear fogs.

It all went together very well!, all the lights appeared to work in the right way, nearest switch to the steering wheel, operated the front fogs, and the newly installed switch operated the rear fog pair Hurrah!. BUT I now find, that if i use the indicators, with the rear fogs 'on', I am getting sympathy flashing on the fogs, and the other side lights as well! very pretty, but not useful when your trying to turn left/right, and the whole of the back of the car looks like a drive by disco! lol

Any suggestions welcome

Well the plot thickens!, I looked at the wiring diagrams, and I should have a relay in the fusebox for rear fog lights?, mine appears to have just a set of links in that slot is there one i can swap with just to check operation? it does seem that the rear light cluster works fine in all modes, until i switch in the rear fogs, and then its a real light show round the back of the car once the turn flashers are asked to work lol

there you go Fox :- I have sold her now

Still not quite sure, why I sold a 'new' Type R Civic, and bought a 1992 968!, until I drive the 968 on the motorway, and then a silly grin pokes out! lol Still the Type R Civic is one fast little pocket rocket!, 200 bhp, in a car that weighed the same as a pack of ciggies, was great fun!, but I'm getting too old for the boy racer set now....

Check the grounds at the tail lamps. You may have to run a separate ground for each fog lamp.

Well I have found the 'fault' on the fog light problem.

and it was a bit of trial and error, a volt meter and a 12 volt 'tester' lamp that assisted me !.

I had kept the old non-fog light rear cluster looms, and after giving them the once over against the 'new' fog light cluster looms, it was strange to see that the earth (brown) cable was interchanged with the fog light (grey/white) in the six-way connector in the rear of the car. The older non-fog loom didn't have the grey/white cable obviously !, but the positions of these two wires were 'reversed' in the six way connector.

It couldn't be that obvious could it???, Well after confirming what colour wire did what, with the help of a volt meter and test lamp Yep!, they were !, so a quick switch around and solder and shrink wrap, the lights on the rear of the car work as Porsche intended.

If anyone wants to do the job, you will need the switch for the rear fogs, (The loom is there behind the dashboard, next to the front fog switch)

And the part number for the rear light cluster harness with integrated fog lights is 951 631 234 00

The wires are Identified as
GREY= (Two of them attached as one) Side lights.
BLACK= Indicators
RED/BLACK= Brake lights
BLUE/BLACK= Reversing Lights
BROWN = Earth
GREY/WHITE= Rear Fog lights

Having the earth and fog lights signal wires reversed, was giving me the wild light show, that had caused all the grief, switching on the rear fogs effectively put the whole cluster in series across the lamp filaments, and gave the weird results, but I wonder why Porsche 'moved' the earth cable on the fog included looms? another mystery!
