Rear bumper fitment question.

I had my rear bumper repainted, and when I got it back on, it wouldn't fit quite right. If you look at the pictures, you can see that at the top corner of the light, the bumper is sitting in from the body panel. The bumper doesn't really have any flex at this point, because it dives behind the light, and the angles remove any possibility for flex.



Anybody else run into this trouble? I know my car has had work done on the rear end, so it could just be that the body work isn't quite right.

There are a series of bolts that help attach the cover to the car that run along that seem. You can see them if you pull back the carpet. Are all those there and tight? I assume it fit right before the work?

yeah - that's not right - easily fixed though - there is quite a bit of adjustment there - loosen the clams and screws and then snug them up again when the cover is in the right spot

I have never seen a 968 that had a rear bumper that fit. In all cases, the left side and the right differ. There must have been a tooling or assembly issue.



Look at the fit of the tailights in ther rear bumpers. Even if you look at old photos from car tests you will see this.

not really - it just takes a lot of patience lining everything up - they used little clamps and small screws, and the bumper cover is flexible - that makes for a tough fitment job, but it can be done if you take the time - pretty easy to get it close, but to be exact is a pain

Just a photo to show that the fit CAN be made nearly perfect! Both sides fit snug as a bug in a rug!

I recently was hit slightly from behind. The shop, a very good Porsche experienced repair facility, worked hard to buff out the offending marks and scratches. This was despite the insurance adjuster's $1100.00 estimate that included removal, repair, and repaint. My guy said that in his experience it was very hard to refit the plastic bumper back as they warp and shrink over time. Getting the bumper back on with the rubber seal evenly set across the entire bumper is nearly impossible in his estimation. Lucky for me the buff and touch up worked like a charm. I have to crawl under the car and get close to see the slight scratches remaining. Far better than a permanently mis-fitting bumper.



Of course I returned the unused portion of the insurance settlement <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

after removing and reinstalling mine a half dozen times now, i ahve figured out some tricks that make it easier - it only takes about 10 minutes to get it close - another 20 invested though, and it's dead nuts on - if you know the trick



the key is not to tighten anything until it is placed, then to clamp the inner 2 first at 50% - then work outward, adjusting along the way- then go back and tighten inners first and again work to the outers



if you start at the ends first, you will never get it - that is the mistake most shops make, because it is easier to do it that way - unfortunately, in this case, easy doesn't do it
