Head removal and exhaust manifold
#1

I'm removing the head on my 968. From what I have read the exhaust manifold stays on during removal. It looks to me like there is not enough clearance. I briefly tried to remove the head today but the exhaust hit. I am going to have to get someone to help me but was wondering if there is a trick or something I am missing? Thanks

i've never heard of leaving it on.  seems silly to me.  why would you do that?

everybody i know pulls the manifold.  i pulled mine.   not sure why you wouldn't.  i see no advantage to leaving it on, and only complications.  why fight those things?  it's not like you could leave it on to clean up the surface anyway.

I agree, it would be a lot easier to pull the head with the manifold off.  I will take the nuts off and see if it will come off.  I'm not sure there is enough room on my car for it to clear the studs before hitting the body?

regarding the removal of the exhaust manifold, in a stock 968 with a RS barn chip # 1 and a RS barn exhaust will a tuned header improve much horsepower? When I say RS barn exhaust I mean not a racing exhaust, standard diameter.

Just did mine last month. I read the same on Clarks and pulled the head with manifold and it was a tough fit for removal. When I reassembled I installed the head 1st then manifold. So remove the manifold 1st is the way to go!!!

yeah - i've found a number of things in clark's that just don't make sense, or are plain wrong.  decent resource, but not always the best.

but, that's why this site is here, right?
