My car's got a rattle that sounds like it's coming from the trunk lid or inside the trunk. I haven't done much in the way of diagnosing, but thought I'd ask here first if there are any known causes. The car's completely rattle-free except for this one coming from the back.

Check the rear cubbies for loose items.
Check to make sure everything is tight and secure in the spare tire well.

Then check to see if the rear spoiler is not loose.

I have the same problem, but i have cleared everything from the back and still have the rattle. I am afraid that it might be the hatch itself [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif[/img]

Interesting Jay, thanks for starting this discussion. For the past couple of months I've been considering the same.

I think one of the rattles in my case is the hatch. When closed, and I push down on it, then it moves down a bit more. I think I have to try to adjust the 2 pegs, try to tighten them, so the hatch closes more snuggly. Maybe, not sure, wanted to look for any guidance, since if I adjust them too tightly, does that create a further problem?

A few times I've tried to diagnose the top end of the hatch. While driving on bumpy roads, I reach my hand back to push up on the glass itself to see if the rattle does away. No change when I do this.

Interested to hear more ideas on this whole subject.

You could also check the hatch pins.
Some tension or shortening of them maybe needed.
Do this in very small increments.

+1 . I checked everything ( well, everything mentioned in this thread ), the rattle is still there. Sounds like I'm carrying a bunch of rocks back there, a muffled, non-metallic rattle which you don't hear if the road is smooth ( highway, etc ), but the moment I drive on a street with a slightly rough surface, cracks, bumps there it is - rattle, rattle ! [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif[/img]

That is exactly what mine sounds like. Could this be delamination?

I shook and pushed the car and hatchback in every direction imaginable, and had my mechanic check that out as well, because that was my first guess as to what could be causing the rattle.. but no sound at all coming from there. That said, I'm not sure that shaking or pushing the car by hand really creates the same dynamics as when driving it over rough surfaces so I suppose it's always possible.
I'm thinking about going into a parking lot, driving slowly ( because I do hear the rattle mostly at low speeds ) and having someone on the car with the body weight on the hatchback ( hopefully without breaking the rear spoiler in the process [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif[/img] ) to see if that eliminates the rattle. Somehow though, I still think it's coming from something under the car [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif[/img]

The rubber mounts detiorate over time.

One or two loose fittings and you'll here an annoying little rattle.

I'm experiencing same rattle. I just have fixed the side trims on the hatch (half of its fixtures were loose) with Loctite epoxy and it didn't solve the rattle. My hatch is slightly delaminated between hinges so I'm suspecting it to be the root cause of the annoying sound.

Check the wing. It could be very subtly loose. It's not exactly easy to tighten either.

Could be something behind the rear covering, where the taillight assy's are, or maybe the bumper brackets.
