radio wiring
#1

i inherited a very messed up stereo when i bought my 92 cab last year.

i started to install a new head unit last night.

i pulled the wiring diagram out of the tech manual, but can't find the red/black lead that is supposed to go to the antenna booster. i pulled back as much tape loom as i could and it just isn't there.

i do have a blue/brown wire that is unclaimed.... could this go to the booster?

also, there's a black wire that is sheathed with the antenna cable - where should i hook this up? just ground it, or could it be the booster?

one last thing... there is a very, very light gauge coax cable that was sitting loose in the radio compartment. i traced it all the way back to the driver's-side footwell by the door jamb. from there, i can't tell what it's for. could it be some kind of security system cable from the original radio anti-theft?

i'd really appreciate any help on these antenna wires. i'd like to wrap this up tonight. is there a way to test the wires to see if they go to the booster? where is the booster? i thought it was behind the glove box, but all i saw was the air bag control box back there.

thanks!

the booster is to the right side of the glove box - trace your antenna coax - it should lead you right there - there definitely should be a red/black wire in there somewhere down near the molex that goes to the radio - it's a seperate wire with its own molex, and connects to the lead that runs from the booster that i think i remembers as the black one you are talking about

no idea what the other coax is

thanks, flash.

do you remember what the booster looks like?

i'm used to the in-line ones that look like a small cylinder (half inch dia, couple inches long) with a small gauge wire coming out....

i did notice a metal box on the passenger side just behind where the wires from the door come into the car. but by that point, my back was starting to complain and i had to abandon ship.

any thoughts on the wire that is in the sheathing with the antenna cable? i'm tempted to hook it up to the antenna output from the radio to see what happens, but i don't want to blow up any delicate electronics.

i wonder if i have a post original antenna cable and the wire with it is for the booster???

and that blue/brown wire??? not on any wire diagrams that i could find... hmmm

small rectangular box - smaller than a pack of cigarettes

yes, as i said, i am pretty sure that lead that runs along the antenna lead is the lead to the booster

don't know if this thread will survive, but i'll give 'er a shot.

i hooked everything up and the radio worked pretty well with no booster wire connected. i used my multi meter to double check the two left over wires. the one small black wire right on the antenna cable had no reading and the brown/blue one had about 4.8-5.0 volts positive.

i hooked up the power antenna line from the radio to the small black wire on the car antenna lead and it did boost the reception a tad. wasn't night and day, but it did help. i didn't think to try am freq's. i'll try that tonight. couldn't ever get them before.

so my final question.... the brown/blue wire with about 5v, could that be a dimmer lead? by process of elimination, i am guessing that it probably is, but didn't want to hook it up before checking what the symptoms of a dimmer lead would be. does it fit the description? i had it hooked up to the multimeter, but was turning the windshield int dial instead of the headlight dial, so i'll have to try that again.

not sure - possibly - i am not using that lead for anything - i connected the red/black to the booster - it was 12v switched hot, so you are probably fine with the blue kicker wire from the deck

and you are right - the booster doesn't do a lot, but it does help - the biggest improvement on mine was in replacing my windshield, and thereby the antenna itself - the antennna itself had a bad tether lead going from the windshield to the connector

my radio requires a memory feed. Every time i turn on the car i have to reset the eq, which is slowly but surely becoming a PITA. The only wire that was left to cap off was a red/black one - not the antenna lead. This red/black wire was attached to the original harness.

So my mission is.... cut the red one or the blue one while the mission impossible theme is playing.

i can't remember which color is which, but i believe that the red wire from the 968 goes to the yellow wire from your new radio and there's a green-ish looking wire that goes to the red wire on your new radio.

if you have a multi-meter it's pretty easy to double check these. just turn the key on and off and you'll see which one is ign and which is batt.

you may have to remove some of that hockey-tape looking stuff to find the lead that was cut short. probably, like mine, you had a hack in there before.

I blew a few fuses determining where the green and red wires went. The radio is hooked up, but for some reason it needs a memory connection. All settings are cleared once the ignition is off. Perhaps i should just connect that one last red/black ( not antenna amplifier) to the memory.. couldn't hurt. I have one of those current testers that pokes the wire and shows wither the wire is hot or not. It was very useful when i had to rewire my 944. The asshole that installed the radio didn't connect the ground.... smoked everything. Unfortunately, it smoked up two months later . That's why i won't let anybody touch my cars anymore. the car turns over now.... and then a hurricane hit. s***

could you have a blown fuse somewhere? maybe that's why your memory wire isn't live... hmmm.

on mine, there was one group of wires for speakers and another for power.

the power bundle had a ground, batt, ign, and some odd br/bl wire???

sorry, hope that helps some.
