radar detector not working ?
#1

I passed by two highway patrol cars today, poised on each side of the freeway, about 1 mile apart from one another and both cops were standing outside their car with their radars / laser guns pointed at the oncoming traffic. There was no obstruction ( curves, hills, etc..), I could clearly see both from about 1/8 maybe even as far as 1/4 mile away and my detector was on highway mode ( a cordless " Passport 2 " model for whatever relevance that may have, and with a fully charged battery btw, I checked afterward ..) but no sound / alert whatsoever on EITHER one of those..and one was pointed straight at me ! WTF ??!!

Passport 2? That's not a current model. Is it an older model or did you mean Solo 2? Does it have Ka band? Laser? Another possibility is that the cops were using pulse radar and no one was going fast enough for the cops to turn it on.

Sorry, you're correct ; it's a Solo S2 ( not sure why Passport 2 stuck in my mind .. Isn't the entire name of the make and model something ridiculous like " Escort, Passport Solo S 2 " ? ) Has all the bands, but does that model detect laser as well ? Anyway, none of the cars including myself were going over 70, and the cops had a very decent vantage of what was coming their way from a pretty long distance so the off-mode pulse radar could explain it..

The Solo S2 has X, K, Ka, & Laser. I have both an S2 and the newer S3. The Solo is the only cordless detector worth getting. The readout on the S3 is far superior to that of the S2 which is almost impossible to read during the day - especially if you're wearing sunglasses. Sounds like you ran into pulse radar.

Double check that you haven't disabled a band or two by mistake.

Will check all the settings again, just to make sure. BTW, what's the point to having 1 highway, 2 city or 3 auto scans options on those radars, wouldn't the " auto " setting by itself cover both 1 and 2 scans situations ?

My observation as I drove over to the other side of the Bay via the San Mateo Bridge. As I was approaching the toll area, there was a CHP cruiser parked by side of the road pointing his radar or laser as me as I went by. I get through the toll plaza and some moron in a rice rocket comes blasting across 3 lanes of traffic at well over the speed limit and heads across the bridge at probably 80 mph. Not a minute later some idiot on a motorcycle passed me on the right, lane splitting, at en estimated speed of 100 mph.

It seems to me that the residents of the State of California would be served if the CHP were actually patrolling the roads, bust reckless drivers and drunks, rather than sitting by the side of road trying to bust some poor sob going 5 mph over the posted limit. The CHPs current fixation on sitting along side the road with radar guns is nothing more than a revenue grab and I would say contributes very little to public safety. Don't know if they have a complaint line or not, but I'm going to look tomorrow.

Probably time to install a chaff dispenser on the 968, although I've become adept at hiding behind vans and SUV whenever I spot a sped trap.

Nope, but I haven't seen a guy on a motorcycle digging vigorously in his pants at 70 mph either. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/icon_lol1.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

My Valentine saved my A$$ last night. I kinda took off on a 2 lane limited acces highway and low and behold a cop in the center lane (under a bridge) had his radar on and my detector lit up . Quickly hit the brakes and slowed down. Whew, I looked back and he wasn't after me. I knew to slow down as there are usually no cops on this road. I take it on my way to and from the shop. This was more frightening to me as I just got a ticket a month ago and didn't want to get stopped again. I have been more cautious lately but just couldn't keep my right foot from pusjing the pedal. Ironically enough when I use the toll road (not often) the exits now have a camera to detect toll evaders and it trips my detector. A good test to of whether my detedtor is working.

On my way to work this morning, my radar detector was very well behaved. The little bumpers look kind of funny, but they totally did the job, so I'll probably replace them with some very thin rubber strips, like the material that's left over after you remove these little round bumpers from the sheet they come on.

Here's how it's positioned on the windshield...

... and here's the little bumpers that helped tremendously.

I've have used a Passport SR7 w/shifters for years now. It has saved me many times over.

But today something I've never seen before.

While my detector gave me more then ample warning time to adjust my speed ,after I passed the patrol car parked in the center of the road the detector gave a second warning about a half mile up the same road.

I can only assume after passing a radar trap a person could reason he is in the clear.

Clever police dept.
