Pulling the engine
#1

Took the baby in to my mechanic for several oil & coolant leaks. Looks like the engine will need to come out in order to get to everything! Ouch $$$!

However, with the engine out, I am looking for collective advice on other areas to review/replace. It is a '93 with 103,000 miles. Suggestions?

You probably have a drippy oil pan seal (?) so if that has to be replace you are staring at the bottom end bearings. I did mine at 135,000Km and they were showing signs of wear.

Go through the PET, and replace every o-ring and seal on the engine. They're not expensive, and you'll never have the kind of access to them again (until you pull the engine again, that is!).

You should also have the cylinder bore diameters measured by a machine shop at the top, center, and bottoms of the bores. These blocks are incredibly tough, but on the off chance that yours shows some wear, you'd want to have the bores honed, and matching rings installed. This is not a likely situation, though, but it wouldn't hurt to check.

Since you have the head off, you should get a standard valve job. The valve seats on these engines are very hard, but my guides were pretty work. And as DaveN says, new conrod bearings are a good idea as well.

Unless the leaks are severe, can you live with them?

Correct me if I'm wrong but you can't just hone these cylinders. They are Alusil and require special attention, no?

My understanding is that it can be done, but it requires a specific slurry, and the right honing tool. As I said, though, it's typically not needed, since the alusil is basically bullet-proof. My machine shop told me my block could probably go a million miles!

Thanks for the comments. I talked with my mechanic today We are doing:

Oil pressure sender

Water pump

Engine mounts

Crankcase gaskets

Cylinder head gaskets

Oil sender

Checking valve guides

Oil Pan seal (will check the bottom end bearings)

That coolant plug at the rear of the block

And, in the 'while we're at it' category...

Clutch

Control arm bushings

It will sparkle under the hood when it's done. But it's a lot 'o dough! :-(

I have a patient wife!
