Porsche 968CS hot lap video at Bathurst 2012
#1

Guys. A hot of mine at The Porsche Easter Bathurst event. Here I was chasing two 997 GT3's. Was pretty pleased with the car. This was my fastest lap ever, 2min 42sec. Have a laugh and enjoy.

Aside ...This was my first YouTube attempt. Next time I will load it in much higher resolution as it looses a fair bit of clarity.

Makes me jealous - great lap time, but you lifted through the kink - pussy. Love the ground you made on the GT3's over the top of the mountain - impressive, did you get them?

I am still thinking about Drive Bathurst at the end of the year, but not yet committed.

How was the event this year at Easter?

How did you get the steering wheel on the right side? Great video.

That was one of the factory options ( code RHDSW 1234-A ) made for left handed people to make shifting easier for them. ;-)

That is such a cool track. Great driving. Porsche must have forgot to tell you that your car is not supposed to be catching GT3's. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

Yes Eric, I agree! What's hard to pick is the elevation change in the lap, we climb a mountain then traverse it then come flying back down. Awesome.

Hi Craig, I guess I am leaving some room for you to go really fast.....Next year! FYI, I am at 7000rpm in fifth as I pull to the left side of the track, I lift to weight the front tyres, and am flat again at full throttle as soon as the car has angled to the ripple strip apex. Given its apparently the fastest touring car corner in the world and I caught just about everything through it, I am going to have have you show us the 'fast' way to take it!

The event was superb, helped by three days of perfect weather.

Re the Gt3s I caught and passed slower drivers across the mountain but the straights are so long they generally were a challenge, especially the 3.8s. They accelerate like there is no tomorrow. Overall I was extremely happy. I toy with getting lots more hp as you have, but also like the purity of the car as is, and very fuss free track days. Hmmmm.

Usually I don't enjoy watching someone else drive (or play any sport) but that *was* a really good video, and some nice driving.

Marc - are you running Hoosier's or R-Spec tyres. The first year I was there I could go through the kink flat in 5th, but with the car supercharged I was in 6th and my balls were not big enough. Going through flat in 5th was hairy enough trying to brake for the corner as you s*** yourself until you hit the slight uphill section and then seem to bleed off more speed than you wanted. Effectively you got the car straight and then started braking. I tried to out brake a Cayman S that was holding me up and went off the track and smashed the splitter once.

2:42 is still a bloody good time regardless and must be really pedalling the car and keeping up some corner speed.

Did they have the 2:40 limit and you were out this year as well?

Sorry not to be there - but I did not miss the drive over and back. Any thoughts about doing Drive Bathurst?

For those of you who have not seen the track, have a look at the vertical elevation that you climb and then come back down, it is incredible. A V8 supercar (our version of NASCAR) does a fast lap in 2:11, a Ferrari 458 GT3 did one lap in 2:04 and last year, they let loose an F1 car, and it smashed the lap record, with a driver who had never driven F1 before in it. A 911 GT3 cup car can do something like 2:20's - so 2:42 is a great time given the power difference between a GT3 Cup car and a 968 (along with slicks versus twin groove or R-Spec's). Slicks would probably take another 5 seconds or so off the time.
