Round 4: VIR - #75 2012 PCA Club Racing Season

Round 4: NJMP THUNDERBOLT - #75 2012 PCA Club Racing Season

The first weekend of August saw the #75 RS Barn - AJ Hartman Racing - Hoosier GT5S Porsche 968 take on NJMP Thunderbolt Raceway in what was our Round 4 of our National Championship 2012 Season run.

Friday was an all out testing day for the freshly installed Blown Diffuser setup developed by AJ Hartman Racing after some brainstorming while we modified the rear exhaust setup and vented the gearbox to fight some remaining diff/box overheating issues. Well, with the muffler gone, and a fancy diffuser in place, what else to do with the actual exhaust but blow the diffuser!?! Of course I went for it....! We had some issues with the setup, but really as a result of it working so crazy well. The added down force at lower to mid speeds during mid corner and exit on throttle open is now noticeable better. Actually, kinda EPIC! An EXCELLENT result given that at those speeds the wing is supplying minimal down force. This allows me to work the damping settings a little better to move some grip forward... Yeah babeeee!!!!

To make a long story short, three Sprint races saw the team pull in 3 Class and Overall Wins. In the process we also broke the previous track record by well over a second with a blistering 1:30.318 before we started backing off just enough to just stay in front and save the car and tires for Daytona in October. Sprint 1 was especially tricky as it kicked off in wet conditions while running R6 Hoosiers. We lost the lead briefly to a 944S2 Firehawk on wets and even fell to 3rd after a bit of a mishap in T2 as we tried to carry a bit too much speed for the conditions. Before the race was over, we had recaptured the lead and took the checkered 1st overall. We also had

a big scare after Sprint 3 when we were sent to the scales and almost failed underweight!!!! We were pretty much right on the mark after rolling the car back and forth a few times... Phew!

Our class competition was not running the Enduro so we were disciplined and continued with the strategy to safely gain maximum Championship points while minimizing risk. With a combined Enduro and almost 50 cars ranging from Cup Cars to SP1 1st generation 944s, we decided to skip the Enduro Qualifying and start the race from the back of the back and stay out of trouble. After a planned long pit stop, we went back out and finished the Enduro without issues or problems.

We continue to lead the Regional and National PCA GT5S Championship Points race. Albeit my the smallest of possible margins and questionably, even lagging a bit from the missed points at the Rolex race when we got hit in T1 and the 2nd place finish at LRP in the Season Opener....

Videos will be uploaded soon....

And the preparations for Daytona are underway!!!!! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rock.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Cheers.

Another amazing performance! Congrats. Out of curiosity, was the race held on the Lightning circuit, or the full 2.25 mile track?

Races were on Thunderbolt-the big track where they run the Rolex and Grand Am races. Pablos Un-Race car turns competetive (winning) laps in Grand Am Continental series. Top 3 finishers below

1. Subaru WRX-STI 130.192-Factory Subaru Entry on home track

2. BMW M3 Coupe 131.301-Fall Line Motorsports

3. Camaro GS-R 130.503-Tube frame-double wishbone suspension allowed and used

Thanks, Pete. A couple of follow-up questions:

- What do you mean by Pablo's "un-race car"? Seems pretty "racey" to me <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

- Pablo's time falls in the mix of the three you show. Excuse my ignorance of racing, but I thought he had won his class. Are the three cars you show from a different class than the one Pablo competes in?

Again, sorry about the stupid question. Great job by Pablo and the team!

Pablo races in NASA and PCA . I was comparing his times to a professional race series with professional race drivers on same track. What is interesting is Camaro is allowed to use a non factory chassis with a complete tube frame with equal length control racing suspension. Pablo has to use a terrible (un-race) car.

Ah, OK, thanks for clarifying.

That doesn't seem very fair. But then, that would start a whole discussion on racing and rules and fairness, wouldn't it...

Go get'em at The Glen! I missed my WGI race this year due to schedule conflicts. I love that place... I have never driven the short course but I am sure it is kool...

Be safe and kick ass!

I was at the club race, your car was very fast, you've got those air dams on the rear bottom. I think there was one other 968 running that was fast, blue one if I remember. Can't remember if he was running in your class. Very fun to watch.

Thanks RL. There were a few 968s running well that weekend. The Red and Orange Amy 968 is in my class. Unfortunately, he had an off at T2 during the wet Sprint 1 race and had light contact with the inside wall ending his weekend.

Here is the video of the Sprint 1. Starts under wet and rainy conditions, rains stops/starts several times during the race, then it stops and a dry line starts to surface towards the end of the race. Given that the best time in Sprint 1 sets the grid for Sprint 2, as the track dries, it becomes a race within the race for who will read the track best, and squeeze the fastest times in the drying conditions by maximizing grip in the dry areas but quickly adjusting back in the areas that remained wet....

Very slippery, nice driving and save on turn 2. Wish I could drive my car like that, but I probably weigh 500 lbs more.

Thanks RL... With enough track time I am sure you'll drive better than me!

You'd be surprised. I am running minimum race-end weight of 3,087. So I start the sprints at about 3,050 (with me in it). For 1 Hour enduros i have to add 60 pounds of lead so that I can finish on an empty tank and still make the weight. So I am kinda heavy!
