Round 4: VIR - #75 2012 PCA Club Racing Season
#21

Not to divert this thread too much, but there's something I've been wondering about for a long time, so this is good a time/place to ask it as any. A fully-stripped, acid-dipped, carbon fiber/fiberglass/lexan body-paneled 968 could theoretically weigh in at what, maybe 2400 pounds? And a reliable, race-tuned N/A engine with all the goodies (cams, headers, 12.5:1 compression, porting, ECU optimization, upsized injectors, etc.) should be able to achieve, say, 320 hp on racing gas, right? This give a weight/power ratio of 7.5:1. which was supercar territory not so long ago, and better than a non-Z06/ZR1 Corvette. So, why do we never hear of 968s racing in classes at around this level of weight/power? In other words, why are 968s always raced with up to hundreds of pounds of ballast, and often with relatively stock engines? Given the amazing success of 968s in the classes where they're currently campaigned, I would think they (and our very talented cadre of drivers) would hold their own in faster classes as well. Is it the cost of producing and running an engine capable of 300+ HP, plus the cost of the extra wear and tear that comes with running a car with higher levels of power? Thanks.

My short answer is; Yes. If I am going to spend $50-75,000 in doing what you propose to get to that power-weight, I will not do it on a 20 year old chassis and equivalent technology. Would the car be competitive and a blast to drive, absolutely. But for that money, or less, at that same power to weight so will a Cayman S, Cup Car, Vette, M3, Noble, etc...and minus 1,000,001 headasches with infinite # of hours reinventing wheels. Especially for me. I want and love to race, drive, setup, etc. Not tinker.

Thanks for the reply, Pablo. I figured it was a cost thing. Wow, $50-75K - that's definitely some serious coin.

2012 PCA Racing Round 4 Enduro - New Jersey Motorsports Park Thunderbolt Raceway

by Pablo Crespo

The last weekend of August 2012 saw the #75 RS Barn - AJ Hartman Racing - Hoosier GT5S Porsche 968 take on NJMP Thunderbolt Raceway (without the Chicane) in what was our Round 4 of our 2012 National Championship battle.

We tackled the weekend's championship points earning endurance race (90 Minute Enduro) even more conservatively than Sprint 3 as Daytona in a few weeks remained the focus and the class competition had suffered from earlier attrition. With a combined group and a green flag that would see over 60 cars start the race together, we decided to start from the back to avoid mid-pack chaos odds and play it ultra safe.

The track was dry but still somewhat slick as a result of the previous rainy conditions. We slowly worked our way through the field and after several very long yellows after incidents, we found ourselves in decent overall position. After a planned long pit stop, we took the checkered flag in one piece and our focus immediately shifted to Daytona!
