Passenger Door hard to open
#1

The previous owner had a new door opening mechanism installed (not sure exactly what all was included) when the passenger door stopped opening. Now the door opens fine from the inside, but from the outside you really have to squeeze the handle. Seriously, all of my friends think that I haven't unlocked the car yet when they go to get in. Is there a simple adjustment I might make to reduce the tension or is it a trip back to the dealer???

Thanks.

Assuming there are no broken parts, the problem you're having is generally the result of either adjustment being needed to the rod that connects the outside "trigger" to the door lock, or a good cleaning being needed of the mechanism (door handle and lock). Has the level of difficulty been gradually increasing? If so, it suggests that cleaning is needed, and not adjustment. The adjustment, if it's needed, is theoretically simple but actually quite a pain, as it involves removing the interior door panel (not as bad as it might seem) and then adjusting a threaded plastic piece in the door for which access is almost nil (particularly for reassembly). I've been through all of this, so I can provide more info if you need. As a first step, though, I'd remove the door handle and then clean and lubricate that part of the mechanism. Removing the lock from the door can be difficult (the bolts have Loctite on them) but a careful job with a good spray cleaner and lubricant can do wonders.

I have a similar problem, but mine is that the trigger sticks, and the door doesn't actually unlock properly. I end up having to walk to the passanger side door, move the trigger away from the handle, relock, and unlock. I'm assuming it's a cleaning issue in my case.

Most likely your problem is cleaning. However, it is also possible that a small lug on the trigger, which causes the door lock mechanism to operate, has partially broken. This can affect the return of the trigger.

The door opening has been difficult ever since it was fixed, so I assume it is an adjustment issue, not a cleaning one. The degree of difficulty does not seem to have changed. Thanks for the input.
