original stereo equipment question
#21

<!--quoteo(post=69324:date=Mar 25 2009, 07:48 AM:name=flash)-->QUOTE (flash @ Mar 25 2009, 07:48 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><!--quotec-->no worries - send me a note with your number and we'll see if we can do it over the phone

the infinities are 2 ohms? that's odd - mine are 4 - i didn't think they even made a 2 ohm speaker - what model?<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Dave's right, the Reference as well as the Kappa are 2 ohms. If I decide to go without an amp, I will add the (Infinity) 6.5" in the rears and the (same) 5.25" in the front doors. Without an amp, will the OEM tweeters on the front door panels be sufficient? I did buy a Kenwood KAC - 6404 amp (it was on special) that is rated at 40W x 4, but with the 2 ohm speakers, It'll put out 60W x 4. I will not use the Infinity speakers if I install this amp - I've already decided to add JL Audio C2-525x (5.25") in the front and JL Audio C2-600x (6.5") in the rear. At that point I think I will have to change the front door mounted tweeters - JL Audio C5-075ct 3/4" silk dome tweeters. Are these the correct size tweeters? Question: where is the best place to mount this amp? Also, I want to add an XM tuner to complement the Pioneer DEH-6000BT CD Receiver - it's a new model that is identical to the 7000 but does not have the fold-down face. Do any of you folks have a suggested spot to install the XM "box"? It is about 6" x 7" x 1" - perhaps the glove box? I figure the antenna would work best on the rear hatch - I have seen someone mount it magnetically atop a rear shock tower facing up thru the rear hatch. Does that make sense? The wife's 7000BT did come with an instructional DVD so hopefully I can sit and watch, replay, watch again, repeat till I can tune the thing - if I am still confused, I will send you a quick note and try to figure this thing out over the phone - thanks for that Flash. Did you know Crutchfield will send you a kit that installs in your car and adjusts your tuner / amp / speakers for optimal imaging? It "pings" a signal till you have everything synched. The girl I spoke to said I could order it, use it, then send it back for a full refund after it's done its thing. That's a sure sign I've spent far too much money there.

wow - i guess that's the difference between the 5022 and the 5012 - mine are 4 ohm

tweeters are going to be a pain to install - i did it on both cars and enjoyed it on neither - be patient and think about it twice before you cut into anything

i'd like to know more about this "tuning kit"

There are past posts on speakers installations.
I recommend using matched set 5.25" seperates for the front. It takes some work to replace the tweeter, cutting the stock one
and inserting and angling the new tweeter. The way the speaker for the front is located, try finding speaker sets with tweeters
that go as low as possible for better font imaging.

I decide to forgo the rear speakers and use 8" subs in the rear wheelwells with the amp in the spare wheelwell. However, I'm sure
Flash's rear speaker mods are easier to do than adding subs.

I found a big difference using dampening material behind the speakers and also under the rear hatch mat, you'll be able to hear
more of sound spectrum from the unit.
Best of luck

I retrofitted new tweeters into the old Nokia plastic mounts without too much problem. The adapters that come with the 5022 kit fit inside the black plastic mounts with ease once you drill out the old tweeters and expand the hole. I used plumbers ABS cement and bonded the old mount to the one that came with the speaker kit. It is definitly worth changing the tweeters, my experience was night and day for SPL output.

good explanation, that what I did. I have MB Quarts in the front. I thought about using the front speaker cut outs on the door
but decided not to cut the panel.
